Selene Jean is a ship Engineer based at Prospector's Rest in the Kuk system. She is reached through Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn and specialises in strengthening a ship's hull and internal-module protection.[1]

Selene provides Grade 5 Armour and Grade 5 Hull Reinforcement Package Engineering. In Live, she also provides the Operations-era Heavy Duty Module Reinforcement Package blueprint through Grade 5 for compatible Merc modules.[1][2]

Field note

Receiving Tod McQuinn's referral does not automatically unlock Selene. You must also complete her mining requirement and provide the Painite requested for the final unlock.

Location

Prospector's Rest is a surface Engineer base on Kuk B 3.[3]

How to Discover Selene Jean

Selene Jean is discovered through Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn.

Reach Grade 3 access and progress at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Tod to receive his referral to Selene.[4]

Field note

Receiving Tod's referral makes Selene known to you. Her separate 500-tonne mining requirement must still be completed before her workshop can be unlocked.

How to Receive an Invitation

Mine and refine at least 500 tonnes of ore.[1][4]

This is a cumulative mining requirement. You do not need to keep or deliver the full 500 tonnes to Selene. The material only needs to be mined and refined; the separate Painite requirement is the cargo that must actually be taken to Prospector's Rest.

The 500 tonnes do not have to consist of a single mineral or metal.

Checking your mining progress

The relevant in-game mining statistic is Minerals Refined.

To check it:

  1. Open the right-hand cockpit panel.
  2. Select Codex.
  3. Open the Commander section.
  4. Select Stats.
  5. Open the Mining statistics.
  6. Find Minerals Refined.

Community testing of Selene's requirement identifies this counter as the value used for her 500-tonne mining threshold.[5]

Important

The requirement is based on material that has actually passed through your ship's Refinery. Simply collecting mining fragments without refining them into commodities does not complete the 500-tonne requirement.

Tip

Because Selene also requires 10 Painite for her final unlock, you can save time by mining Painite during the same mining session rather than completing the 500 tonnes first and looking for Painite afterward.

See Mining for ship outfitting, ring selection, prospecting, refining, and collection mechanics.

How to Unlock Selene Jean

To gain access to Selene's Engineering workshop:

  1. Reach Grade 3 access and at least one-third progress toward Grade 4 with Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn.
  2. Receive Tod's referral to Selene Jean.
  3. Mine and refine at least 500 tonnes of ore.
  4. Obtain 10 units of Painite.
  5. Travel to Prospector's Rest in Kuk.
  6. Donate the 10 Painite to Selene Jean.
  7. Enter the Engineer workshop and begin increasing your reputation with Selene.

Important

Painite is a mined commodity. It is not a Raw, Manufactured, or Encoded Engineering material. Each unit occupies one tonne of cargo space, so transporting the full unlock requirement requires at least 10 tonnes of cargo capacity.[6]

Obtaining Painite

Painite is produced through mining.[6]

For Selene's unlock, the simplest approach is to collect at least 10 tonnes while working on the 500-tonne mining requirement.

Painite can be laser-mined from suitable asteroids in metallic rings. A Detailed Surface Scanner can be used to locate Painite hotspots within planetary rings, and an A-rated Prospector Limpet Controller improves fragment yield while also showing the contents of the asteroid.

A basic laser-mining setup normally includes:

See Painite for current mining methods and Mining for the full mining workflow.

Tip

Once you have mined the 10 Painite required for Selene, keep it in your cargo hold while finishing the remainder of the 500-tonne requirement. Other mined commodities can be sold or discarded as needed.

Field note

Current Engineer data specifically lists Selene's unlock requirement as 10 units of mined Painite. Mining the required Painite yourself while completing the 500-tonne requirement avoids relying on alternative acquisition methods whose behavior may differ between game versions.[1]

Field note

Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after Selene is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]

Increasing Engineer Reputation

Reputation with Selene Jean can be increased by:

  • crafting Engineering modifications at Prospector's Rest;
  • selling commodities at Prospector's Rest; or
  • selling exploration data at Prospector's Rest.[1]

Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Selene supports for each blueprint.

Reaching Grade 3 access and progressing at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 also allows Selene to provide referrals to Bill Turner and Didi Vatermann.[4]

See Engineer Reputation for how ship Engineer reputation, grade access, blueprint progression, referrals, and alternative reputation methods work.

Tip

If you have commodities left from the mining used to unlock Selene, selling appropriate cargo at Prospector's Rest can help increase your Engineer reputation after the unlock is complete.

Engineer Unlock Chain

Selene Jean belongs to the Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn branch of the ship Engineer network.

The route to Selene is:

Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn
└── Selene Jean

After reaching Grade 3 access and progressing at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Selene, she can provide referrals to:[4]

The complete branch is:

Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn
├── Selene Jean
│ ├── Bill Turner
│ └── Didi Vatermann
└── Petra Olmanova [Colonia]

Current Engineer data independently lists both Bill Turner and Didi Vatermann as being discovered through Selene Jean.[7][8]

Field note

A referral from Selene does not automatically unlock the referred Engineer. Bill Turner and Didi Vatermann each have additional meeting and unlock requirements of their own.

See Engineer Unlock Guide for the complete referral network.

Available Engineering

Selene's current Engineering coverage is shown below. She provides Grade 5 access for each module type she supports.[1]

Operations-era Module Reinforcement Engineering

The Heavy Duty Module Reinforcement Package blueprint was introduced with the Operations update.[9]

It increases Module Reinforcement Package integrity and damage protection at the cost of significantly increased module mass.[2]

Selene can apply Heavy Duty Module Reinforcement Package Engineering through Grade 5.

At Grade 5, the current blueprint provides:

  • +25% integrity
  • +25% damage protection
  • +100% mass[2]

Important

Live only: Heavy Duty Module Reinforcement Package Engineering is part of the Operations-era Engineering system and can only be applied to compatible Merc modules. It also requires Merc Coin as part of its Engineering cost.[2]

Experimental Effects

Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible module can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.

Selene's Armour and Hull Reinforcement Package Engineering supports the same four plating Experimental Effects.

The current Heavy Duty Module Reinforcement Package blueprint also supports these effects in Live.[2]

Armour

Available Armour Experimental Effects include:[10]

Hull Reinforcement Package

Available Hull Reinforcement Package Experimental Effects include:[11]

Module Reinforcement Package

In Live, a compatible Heavy Duty Module Reinforcement Package can use:[2]

See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.

Field note

Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The module must be taken to an Engineer who works on that module.

Selene's most important role is building hull durability.

The correct Armour and Hull Reinforcement configuration depends on whether a build is prioritising raw hull integrity, resistance balance, mass reduction, or protection against a particular damage type.

Heavy Duty Armour

Heavy Duty Armour increases hull integrity and provides a small increase to all resistances at the cost of increased Armour mass.[10]

Tip

Lightweight Alloy exception

The mass increase from Heavy Duty Engineering is not applied to a ship's stock Lightweight Alloy Armour.[10]

This makes Heavy Duty particularly attractive on many ships that keep their standard Lightweight Alloy bulkheads: the ship gains additional hull integrity without receiving the normal Armour-mass penalty from the blueprint.

A common general-purpose pairing is:

  • Heavy Duty Armour
  • Deep Plating

Deep Plating further increases hull integrity while slightly reducing kinetic, thermal, and explosive resistances.

This combination is useful when raw hull strength is the priority, but resistance-focused builds may benefit from a different Experimental Effect.

Hull Reinforcement Packages

For general-purpose hull tanks, Heavy Duty is a common starting point because it substantially increases the hull reinforcement provided by the module.

Deep Plating can then further increase the reinforcement value.

Tip

Common general-purpose choice: Heavy Duty + Deep Plating

For many combat ships, Heavy Duty Hull Reinforcement Packages with Deep Plating provide a large increase in raw hull integrity.

That is not the only useful configuration. Mixing resistance-oriented Hull Reinforcement Packages into the build can improve overall effective durability where the ship's hull resistances are poorly balanced.

Resistance Engineering

Selene also provides dedicated:

  • Blast Resistant;
  • Kinetic Resistant; and
  • Thermal Resistant

blueprints for both Armour and Hull Reinforcement Packages.

These can be used to correct weaknesses in a hull's resistance profile rather than simply maximizing its raw integrity.

See Hull Tanking for how hull integrity, armour hardness, resistances, Hull Reinforcement Packages, and Module Reinforcement Packages interact.

Blueprint Pinning

After earning sufficient reputation with Selene, one of her blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.

Tip

EDFM recommendation: Heavy Duty Hull Reinforcement Package is a strong general-purpose blueprint to consider pinning at Selene.

Selene provides it through Grade 5, and combat-oriented ships commonly fit more than one Hull Reinforcement Package. Pinning the blueprint makes it possible to perform the main Heavy Duty modification remotely on multiple HRPs without returning to Kuk for every module.

If your fleet uses fewer Hull Reinforcement Packages and you frequently modify ship bulkheads instead, Heavy Duty Armour is also a practical Grade 5 pin.

The best choice depends on which modules you engineer most frequently.

Important

A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Effects such as Deep Plating still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.

What Selene Cannot Fully Engineer

Selene provides Grade 5 Engineering for every module type she currently supports.[1]

Her maximum grades are:

  • Armour: Grade 5
  • Hull Reinforcement Package: Grade 5
  • Module Reinforcement Package: Grade 5 (Live-only Heavy Duty Merc blueprint)

This does not mean every type of defensive internal module can be engineered by Selene. Her workshop does not provide Shield Generator, Shield Booster, or Shield Cell Bank Engineering.

For alternative maximum-grade hull Engineering:

  • Petra Olmanova provides Grade 5 Armour and Hull Reinforcement Package Engineering in Colonia.
  • Liz Ryder provides lower-grade Armour and Hull Reinforcement Package Engineering but is available independently earlier in the Engineer network.[12]

In Live, Petra Olmanova also supports Grade 5 Heavy Duty Module Reinforcement Package Engineering.[2]

Selene is therefore the primary Bubble Engineer for commanders who want maximum-grade conventional Armour and Hull Reinforcement Engineering.

What Next?

Progressing Selene's reputation opens two additional Engineer paths.
