Didi Vatermann is a ship Engineer based at Vatermann LLC in the Leesti system. She is reached through Selene Jean and specialises in defensive shield systems.[1]

Didi provides Grade 5 Shield Booster Engineering and Grade 3 Shield Generator Engineering. Her maximum-grade Shield Booster access makes her one of the primary Engineers for building high-strength or resistance-focused shield configurations.[1]

Field note

Didi's primary specialty is the Shield Booster. Although she also engineers Shield Generators, that capability stops at Grade 3; Lei Cheung and Mel Brandon can take Shield Generator blueprints to Grade 5.

Location

Vatermann LLC is a surface Engineer base on Leesti 1 a.[2]

How to Discover Didi Vatermann

Didi Vatermann is discovered through Selene Jean.

Reach Grade 3 access and progress at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Selene to receive her referral to Didi.[3]

Selene can also refer Commanders to Bill Turner. Didi and Bill are therefore parallel referrals rather than one being required for the other.

Field note

Receiving Selene's referral makes Didi known to you. Her separate Trade-rank requirement must still be satisfied before her workshop can be unlocked.

How to Receive an Invitation

Reach the Pilots Federation Trade rank of Merchant or higher.[1]

The Trade ranks leading to Merchant are:

Penniless
└── Mostly Penniless
    └── Peddler
        └── Dealer
            └── Merchant

If your Trade rank is already Merchant or higher, Didi's meeting requirement has been satisfied.

See Trade Rank for how Trade rank is earned and how to check your current progress.

Field note

The Trade-rank requirement and the 50-unit Lavian Brandy donation are separate. Reaching Merchant allows you to meet Didi; the Brandy is then required to unlock her workshop.

How to Unlock Didi Vatermann

Unlock requirements summary:

  • Reach Grade 3 access and at least one-third progress toward Grade 4 with Selene Jean.
  • Reach Merchant or higher in Trade Rank.
  • Obtain a total of 50 units of Lavian Brandy.
  • Donate the 50 Lavian Brandy to Didi Vatermann.

Important

Lavian Brandy is a rare commodity. It is not a Raw, Manufactured, or Encoded Engineering material. Each unit occupies one tonne of cargo space.

For the complete step-by-step process, see Unlocking Didi Vatermann.

Obtaining Lavian Brandy

The normal production source for Lavian Brandy is:

Didi requires 50 units in total.

Rare commodities have limited availability, and Lave Station may not have all 50 units available to you at once. If necessary, the unlock can be completed through multiple deliveries to Vatermann LLC.

Tip

Lave and Leesti are neighbouring systems, so multiple deliveries are considerably less inconvenient here than for rare-good unlocks whose source and Engineer are much farther apart.

Player-owned Fleet Carriers may also offer Lavian Brandy through their commodity markets when stock has been made available by another Commander. Carrier inventories and prices are player-controlled and can change.[4]

See Lavian Brandy for current acquisition details and rare-commodity mechanics.

Field note

Do not rely on an old guide's exact Lavian Brandy allocation. Rare-good availability can vary; check the current stock at Lave Station when preparing the unlock.

Field note

Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after Didi is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]

Increasing Engineer Reputation

Reputation with Didi Vatermann can be increased by:

  • crafting Engineering modifications at Vatermann LLC; or
  • selling commodities at Vatermann LLC.[1]

Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Didi supports for each blueprint.

See Engineer Reputation for how ship Engineer reputation, grade access, blueprint progression, referrals, and alternative reputation methods work.

Tip

If you have ordinary commodities to sell after unlocking Didi, selling them through the commodity market at Vatermann LLC can help increase your Engineer reputation without relying entirely on Engineering rolls.

Engineer Unlock Chain

Didi Vatermann belongs to the Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn branch of the ship Engineer network.

The route to Didi is:

Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn
└── Selene Jean
    └── Didi Vatermann

Selene also provides a referral to Bill Turner:

Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn
├── Selene Jean
│ ├── Bill Turner
│ └── Didi Vatermann
└── Petra Olmanova [Colonia]

Didi Vatermann does not currently lead to another Engineer in the active ship Engineer referral network.[5]

Field note

Didi Vatermann and Bill Turner are parallel referrals from Selene Jean. Unlocking either one is not required before unlocking the other.

See Engineer Unlock Guide for the complete referral network.

Available Engineering

Didi's current Engineering coverage is shown below. The listed grade is the highest grade she can apply to that module.[1]

Module Available blueprints Maximum grade
Shield Booster
  • Blast Resistant
  • Heavy Duty
  • Kinetic Resistant
  • Resistance Augmented
  • Thermal Resistant
Grade 5
Shield Generator
  • Enhanced Low Power
  • Kinetic Resistant
  • Reinforced
  • Thermal Resistant
Grade 3

Didi's maximum-grade specialty is therefore the Shield Booster. Her Shield Generator Engineering is still useful for lower-grade modifications and Experimental Effects, but Commanders seeking Grade 4 or Grade 5 Shield Generator Engineering need another Engineer.

Experimental Effects

Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible module can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.

Didi can apply Experimental Effects to both Shield Boosters and Shield Generators.

This remains useful even for Shield Generators engineered beyond Didi's Grade 3 blueprint limit: an Engineer who works on the module type can apply a compatible Experimental Effect without needing to provide the module's highest blueprint grade.

Shield Booster

Available Shield Booster Experimental Effects include:[6]

Shield Generator

Available Shield Generator Experimental Effects include:[7]

See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.

Field note

Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The module must be taken to an Engineer who works on that module.

Didi's most important capability is her Grade 5 Shield Booster Engineering.

Unlike many modules, Shield Boosters are commonly fitted in groups. A well-designed shield build may therefore use several differently engineered boosters rather than applying the same modification to every utility slot.

Heavy Duty Shield Boosters

Heavy Duty increases the raw shield-strength bonus provided by the booster while increasing its mass and power draw.[6]

At Grade 5, Heavy Duty provides:

  • +38% Shield Boost
  • +15% Integrity
  • +25% Power Draw
  • +300% Mass[6]

A common pairing is:

  • Heavy Duty
  • Super Capacitors

Super Capacitors further increases the booster's shield-strength contribution while slightly reducing its kinetic, thermal, and explosive resistances.

Tip

Common raw-strength choice: Heavy Duty + Super Capacitors

This combination is useful when the goal is maximizing overall shield capacity.

It is especially common on builds where raw megajoules matter more than minimizing utility mass or power draw.

Resistance Augmented Shield Boosters

Resistance Augmented improves resistance against all three conventional damage types at the cost of increased power draw and reduced module integrity.[8]

At Grade 5, Resistance Augmented provides:

  • +17% Kinetic Resistance
  • +17% Thermal Resistance
  • +17% Explosive Resistance
  • +25% Power Draw
  • -12% Integrity[8]

Tip

Do not engineer every Shield Booster automatically as Heavy Duty.

Many effective shield builds combine Heavy Duty boosters for additional raw strength with Resistance Augmented boosters to improve the shield's resistance profile.

The best balance depends on the Shield Generator blueprint, the number of utility slots available, and the role of the ship.

Damage-specific Shield Boosters

Didi also provides:

through Grade 5.

These are useful when a shield build has a specific resistance weakness that is better corrected directly rather than through Resistance Augmented.

See Shield Engineering for how Shield Generators, Shield Boosters, resistances, regeneration, and raw shield strength interact.

Blueprint Pinning

After earning sufficient reputation with Didi, one of her blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.

Tip

EDFM recommendation: Heavy Duty Shield Booster is a strong general-purpose blueprint to consider pinning at Didi.

Didi provides Heavy Duty through Grade 5, and ships built around strong shields commonly require several engineered Shield Boosters. Pinning Heavy Duty therefore makes it convenient to prepare the primary raw-strength boosters for multiple ships through Remote Engineering.

If your builds use resistance-oriented boosters more frequently, Resistance Augmented Shield Booster is an equally reasonable alternative pin.

The best pin depends on how you normally configure your shields.

Important

A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Effects such as Super Capacitors still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.

What Didi Cannot Fully Engineer

Didi provides maximum-grade Shield Booster Engineering, but her Shield Generator capability stops at Grade 3.

Her maximum grades are:

  • Shield Booster: Grade 5
  • Shield Generator: Grade 3[1]

For Grade 5 Shield Generator Engineering:

  • Lei Cheung provides Grade 5 Shield Generator Engineering.
  • Mel Brandon provides Grade 5 Shield Generator Engineering in Colonia.[5]

For Grade 5 Shield Booster Engineering, Mel Brandon is the other current maximum-grade alternative.[6]

Didi is therefore primarily a maximum-grade Shield Booster Engineer rather than a replacement for Lei Cheung or Mel Brandon when engineering the Shield Generator itself.

What Next?

Didi Vatermann is the end of her referral branch and does not currently introduce another Engineer.

After unlocking her, your next target depends on which parts of your shield or defensive build still need work.
