How EDFM handles redirects and, eventually, disambiguation.
When to create a redirect
- Common abbreviations and initialisms (e.g.
BGS→ Background Simulation). - American/British spelling variants (e.g.
Colonization→ Colonisation). - Predictable alternate phrasing a commander might actually type (e.g.
New Player Guide→ New Commander Roadmap). - Common short forms of a proper name (e.g.
Farseer→ Felicity Farseer).
Do not create a redirect for a guessed misspelling nobody has actually been observed to type, or "just in case" — every redirect is a small ongoing maintenance surface, not a free action.
Hard rule: the target must exist
A redirect's target page must already exist. Never create a redirect that points at a page that hasn't been written yet — that's a disguised red link, and defeats the purpose of {{Article status}}'s honesty about what's actually here. Special:BrokenRedirects is the audit tool for catching any that slip through or whose target later gets renamed/deleted.
Disambiguation
No title collision currently exists anywhere on EDFM. When one first happens (two different subjects that would naturally share a title), follow the standard parenthetical pattern: Foo (context) for each specific meaning, with a plain Foo page becoming either the more common/primary meaning (with a hatnote pointing to the other) or a short Foo (disambiguation)-style list once there are 3 or more meanings. This matches the convention most large wikis in this style (including RuneScape Wiki, EDFM's stated model) already use, rather than inventing a new one.
Mass renames
Use the Replace Text extension (already installed) rather than hand-editing every incoming link individually if a page ever needs to move — see Special:ReplaceText.
