The Chaff Launcher deploys a burst of signal-disrupting chaff that confuses the tracking systems used by gimballed and turreted weapons.

Overview

Because chaff specifically interferes with the sensor-assisted tracking that gimballed and turreted mounts depend on, it has no effect against fixed weapons, which a pilot aims manually. A Chaff Launcher is a short-duration defensive tool with limited charges and a cooldown between uses, best timed to cover a vulnerable moment — a turn, a low-shield window, or an escape attempt — rather than run continuously.

Field note

Chaff protects against tracking-dependent weapons only. It is not a substitute for Electronic Countermeasure, which instead defends against missiles, torpedoes, and Hatch Breaker limpets.
