Travel to a mapped ring hotspot, drop into the ring safely, and begin prospecting inside the target area.

Use this procedure after a planetary ring has been mapped and the commander wants to start a mining run inside a visible mining hotspot.

Before you start

• Complete How to Scan Planetary Rings for Mining Hotspots or obtain a known hotspot location.
• Fit the mining equipment for the chosen method.
• Bring limpets if the build uses a Prospector Limpet Controller or Collector Limpet Controller.
• Confirm the ship has cargo space after loading limpets.

Procedure

Procedure

1. Select the hotspot marker in the navigation panel or directly from the ring display.
2. Approach the marker in supercruise and reduce speed early enough to avoid an unsafe drop.
3. Drop into the ring near the hotspot marker, not into the planet or exclusion zone.
4. Let the ship settle, check contacts, and avoid boosting through dense asteroid traffic.
5. Move away from the arrival point before starting sustained mining activity.
6. Fire a prospector limpet at candidate asteroids or begin the method-specific search pattern.
7. Continue only if the asteroid contents, deposits, or core signals match the run's goal.

Completion check

The procedure is complete when the ship is safely inside the hotspot area and the commander has begun prospecting or searching asteroids for the selected mining method.

Common problems

• The ship drops far from the marker: approach again in supercruise and watch speed and distance before dropping.
• Asteroids do not contain the target commodity: a hotspot increases targeting usefulness but does not make every asteroid valuable.
• Limpets run out early: leave the ring before the run becomes inefficient; limpets are the ammunition for prospecting and collection.
• Hostile ships appear: be ready to leave, especially if carrying valuable refined cargo.
