EDFM // Engineering / Engineers
An independent starting Engineer based in Deciat, best known for Grade 5 Frame Shift Drive engineering and several useful early ship upgrades.
Felicity Farseer is a ship Engineer based at Farseer Inc in the Deciat system. She is one of the independent starting Engineers: no referral from another Engineer is required before a Commander can discover and meet her.[1]
Farseer is particularly notable for providing Grade 5 Frame Shift Drive engineering, making her a common early destination for Commanders who want to increase the travel range of their ships. She also engineers Thrusters, Sensors, Detailed Surface Scanners, Power Plants, Shield Boosters, and Frame Shift Drive Interdictors, although not all of those modules are available to the same maximum grade.[1]
Field note
Felicity is a starting Engineer, but that does not mean she is automatically unlocked. You must still meet her Exploration-rank requirement and provide the requested unlock commodity.
Location
- System: Deciat
- Facility: Farseer Inc
- Engineer type: Ship Engineer
- Referral required: No
Warning
If you are playing in Open, remember that other Commanders can interdict and attack you. You are not required to visit Farseer Inc in Open; Solo and Private Group use the same Engineer progression if you prefer to avoid unwanted player combat.
How to Discover Felicity Farseer
Felicity Farseer's location is available through public data sources. She does not need to be referred by another Engineer.[1]
How to Receive an Invitation
Reach the Pilots Federation Exploration rank of Scout or higher.[1]
Once the requirement has been met, Felicity becomes available to visit at Farseer Inc in Deciat.
See Exploration Rank if you have not yet reached Scout.
How to Unlock Felicity Farseer
To gain access to Felicity's Engineering workshop:
- Reach Scout or higher in Exploration Rank.
- Obtain 1 unit of Meta-Alloys.
- Travel to Farseer Inc in Deciat.
- Donate the Meta-Alloy to Felicity Farseer.
- Enter the Engineer workshop and begin increasing your reputation with her.
Important
Meta-Alloys are a commodity. They are not Raw, Manufactured, or Encoded Engineering materials. A Meta-Alloy occupies cargo space and must be physically transported to Farseer Inc.[2]
See Meta-Alloys for current acquisition methods rather than relying on an old fixed purchase route.
Field note
Inara currently notes that station services may not become available immediately after Felicity is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, relogging may make them available.[1]
Increasing Engineer Reputation
Reputation with Felicity Farseer can be increased by:
- crafting Engineering modifications at her workshop; or
- selling exploration data at Farseer Inc.[1]
Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Felicity supports for each blueprint.
Tip
If you already have exploration data to sell, turning it in at Farseer Inc can help raise your reputation with Felicity without relying entirely on repeated Engineering rolls.
Engineer Unlock Chain
Felicity Farseer is one of the independent starting points in the ship-Engineer network.
She directly leads to:
Current Engineer data lists Juri Ishmaak as being discovered through Felicity Farseer after reaching approximately Grade 3–4 reputation with her.[3]
Juri Ishmaak subsequently leads farther into that branch:
Felicity Farseer
└── Juri Ishmaak
├── Colonel Bris Dekker
└── The Sarge
Field note
Elvira Martuuk, Liz Ryder, Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn, and The Dweller are separate starting Engineers. They are not unlocked through Felicity Farseer.
See Engineer Unlock Paths for the complete referral network.
Available Engineering
Felicity's current Engineering coverage is:
| Module | Available blueprints | Maximum grade |
|---|---|---|
| Detailed Surface Scanner |
|
Grade 3 |
| Frame Shift Drive |
|
Grade 5 |
| Frame Shift Drive Interdictor |
|
Grade 1 |
| Power Plant |
|
Grade 1 |
| Sensors |
|
Grade 3 |
| Shield Booster |
|
Grade 1 |
| Thrusters |
|
Grade 3 |
These grades and blueprint names are listed in the current Inara Engineer database.[1]
Detailed Surface Scanner note
The current Engineering data lists two Detailed Surface Scanner blueprints for Felicity:
- Expanded Probe Scanning Radius — up to Grade 3
- Long Range Detailed — up to Grade 3
The newer Long Range Detailed blueprint is restricted to compatible Merc modules in the current system.[4]
The Long Range Detailed Surface Scanner was introduced as part of the current Operations-era module additions.[5]
Experimental Effects
Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible module can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.
Felicity can apply Experimental Effects to supported modules that have Experimental Effects available, even when her maximum blueprint grade for that module is lower than Grade 5.
Frame Shift Drive
Available Frame Shift Drive Experimental Effects include:
Power Plant
Available Power Plant Experimental Effects include:
Shield Booster
Available Shield Booster Experimental Effects include:
Thrusters
Available Thruster Experimental Effects include:
See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.[6]
Field note
Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The module must be taken to an Engineer who works on that module.
Recommended Early Engineering
For many new Commanders, Felicity's most immediately useful capability is her Grade 5 Frame Shift Drive engineering.
Tip
Common early choice: Increased Range + Mass Manager
For many ships, Increased Range Frame Shift Drive combined with the Mass Manager Experimental Effect is a strong general-purpose choice for increasing jump range.
This is a recommendation rather than a requirement. Different ships and specialized builds may benefit from different Engineering choices.
Felicity's Grade 3 Thruster access can also be useful early on, particularly because she can apply Thruster Experimental Effects without requiring the Commander to first reach a Grade 5 Thruster Engineer.
Blueprint Pinning
After earning sufficient reputation with Felicity, one of her blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Increased Range Frame Shift Drive is a practical default blueprint to pin at Felicity because she provides it through Grade 5 and it is useful across a large number of ships.
However, Elvira Martuuk also provides Grade 5 Frame Shift Drive Engineering. If Increased Range is already pinned through another Engineer, Felicity's pin can instead be used for another blueprint that better fits your Engineering plan.
Important
A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Experimental Effects still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.
What Felicity Cannot Fully Engineer
Felicity works on several useful modules, but only her Frame Shift Drive Engineering reaches Grade 5.
For example:
- Thrusters stop at Grade 3.
- Sensors stop at Grade 3.
- Detailed Surface Scanners stop at Grade 3.
- Power Plants stop at Grade 1.
- Shield Boosters stop at Grade 1.
- Frame Shift Drive Interdictors stop at Grade 1.[1]
This makes Felicity extremely useful early in Engineering progression, but she does not replace the Engineers who provide higher-grade modifications for those other modules.
What Next?
After unlocking Felicity, you do not need to immediately follow her referral chain.
Depending on what you want to improve, you may instead want to begin working toward another independent starting Engineer.
