== Do not copy images from elsewhere ==
Original captures provide the clearest provenance and make it easier to verify:
Do not upload images copied from Fandom, Reddit, Discord, YouTube, other wikis, or other websites — including images that look "free to use." This applies even if the image would otherwise be useful. If a good screenshot of something doesn't exist yet on this wiki, that's a gap to fill by capturing one, not a reason to import someone else's.

'''"Found on Google" is not a valid source.''' A reverse-image search or a generic web search result tells you where an image currently appears, not who made it or what license actually applies to it.
* what the image actually depicts;
* where it came from;
* when it was captured, where that matters;
* whether it accurately reflects the game; and
* whether the uploader has authority to provide the file to EDFM.

== An image doesn't inherit a webpage's license ==
If EDFM does not yet have a useful screenshot of something, the preferred solution is normally to capture a new one in-game.
A Creative Commons license on a wiki, blog, or gallery page applies to '''that page's own original content''', not automatically to every image displayed on it. Screenshots of ''Elite Dangerous'' hosted on Fandom or elsewhere are not "CC-licensed" just because the site hosting them uses a CC license for its text — the underlying game assets were never the site's to license in the first place. The same logic applies here: see the next section.

== Elite Dangerous screenshots use the Frontier/game-media classification, not a CC license ==
== Do not copy images from elsewhere without authorization ==
A screenshot you personally captured from the game is still, in part, Frontier Developments' copyrighted material — the ships, characters, UI, environments, and other assets shown in it belong to Frontier, not to the person who pressed the screenshot key. On EDFM, this is handled by classifying such images as '''"Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot"''' via {{tl|License-ED screenshot}} (selected from the Licensing dropdown at upload time) rather than as "own work" or under this wiki's CC BY-SA 4.0 text license. See [[Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Legal and Trademark Notice]] for the fuller legal context.
Do not upload images copied from Fandom, Reddit, Discord, YouTube, other wikis, forums, social-media sites, community websites, search results, or other third-party sources merely because they are publicly available or appear to be "free to use."

Third-party images may only be used where their license or the rights holder's permission clearly authorizes EDFM's use, as described below.

'''"Found on Google" is not a valid source.''' A reverse-image search or ordinary web search may help identify where an image appears, but it does not establish who created the image, who owns the relevant rights, or what license applies to it.

When a comparable image can reasonably be captured directly in-game, an original EDFM capture is preferred.

== Do not assume an image shares a webpage's license ==
A Creative Commons license displayed on a wiki, blog, gallery, or other webpage does not by itself prove that every image appearing on that page is available under the same license.

Images may have their own:

* copyright holders;
* licenses;
* permissions;
* attribution requirements; or
* restrictions.

Always verify the provenance and licensing of the '''individual image''' rather than relying on the license shown for the surrounding website or article.

This is particularly important for screenshots containing ''Elite Dangerous'' game assets. A third-party website cannot grant rights in Frontier-owned material merely by applying a Creative Commons license to its own original content.

The same principle applies on EDFM: an image appearing on a page containing CC BY-SA 4.0 text is not automatically covered by EDFM's text license.

== Elite Dangerous screenshots use the Frontier/game-media classification ==
A screenshot personally captured from ''Elite Dangerous'' contains Frontier-owned game content, including ships, characters, interface elements, environments, artwork, and other game assets.

Those underlying game assets belong to Frontier Developments plc and/or their applicable rights holders, not to the person who pressed the screenshot key.

On EDFM, screenshots captured directly from the game should therefore be classified as:

'''Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot'''

using {{tl|License-ED screenshot}}, selected through the '''Licensing''' dropdown on
Special:Upload
.

They should not be classified merely as "own work" or placed under EDFM's CC BY-SA 4.0 text license.

The fact that a contributor personally captured a screenshot may still be recorded in the file's Summary and attribution information, but that does not transfer ownership of Frontier's underlying game assets.

See [[Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Legal and Trademark Notice]] for the broader copyright and trademark context.

== File pages describe the asset, not the subject ==
== File pages describe the asset, not the subject ==
Every file page should carry two separate things, kept deliberately apart: a
== Summary ==
section using {{tl|EDFM image information}} describing the '''picture''' itself (what it depicts, its media type, who captured/made it, how it's been modified, what it's for, who owns the underlying material), and the
== Licensing ==
section covered above. Neither should duplicate the subject's own article — an Engineer portrait's file page isn't the place for that Engineer's location, unlock requirements, or specialties; that stays on the Engineer's own article. See {{tl|EDFM image information}}'s documentation for the full field list.
Every file page should contain two separate kinds of information, deliberately kept apart:

== Third-party media needs a real license or explicit permission ==
* '''Summary''' — created using {{tl|EDFM image information}}. This describes the image itself: what it depicts, its media type, who captured or created it, how it has been modified, what it is intended for, and who owns the underlying material.
If you want to use an image you didn't create and that isn't a screenshot you captured, it needs one of:
* '''Licensing''' — generated from the classification selected through the '''Licensing''' dropdown on
Special:Upload
. This identifies the legal or editorial basis under which EDFM is hosting the image.
* A genuinely compatible license, stated and verifiable (not assumed).
* Explicit permission from the actual rights holder — classify these with {{tl|License-Used with permission}}, and be ready to show where the permission came from.

If neither applies, don't upload it.
Neither section should duplicate the subject's main article.

== AI-generated images ==
For example, the file page for an Engineer portrait should describe the image and its provenance. It should not repeat that Engineer's location, unlock requirements, specialties, or gameplay guidance. That information belongs on the Engineer's article.
Do not use AI-generated images as factual representations of ships, Engineers, locations, UI, facilities, or anything else this wiki documents. An AI-generated image of "Broo Tarquin" or "an Anaconda" is not a source of truth about what that subject actually looks like in-game, and presenting one as though it were a real capture would misinform readers. This doesn't prohibit clearly-labelled illustrative/diagram use where accuracy of appearance isn't the point — but that's a narrow exception, not a default.

See {{tl|EDFM image information}} documentation for the full field list.

== Third-party media requires a verified basis for use ==
If you want to upload an image you did not create and that is not a screenshot you personally captured, there must be a clearly established basis for EDFM to use it.

Acceptable bases include:

* a compatible license whose terms are stated and verifiable; or
* explicit permission from the actual rights holder.

Images used with explicit permission should be classified with {{tl|License-Used with permission}} and should retain enough information to demonstrate where that permission came from if its use is later questioned.

Do not assume that permission from the person who uploaded an image somewhere else is sufficient unless that person actually owns or controls the relevant rights.

If the provenance, license, or permission cannot be established, do not upload the image.

== Fandom and other community wikis ==
The ''Elite Dangerous'' Fandom wiki and other community resources may be used as research sources and cited where appropriate.

Their images should not simply be copied into EDFM.

If an individual image on another wiki is explicitly licensed in a way that permits reuse, contributors must verify the license on that image itself and comply with all applicable conditions before uploading it.

The license covering a wiki's text does not necessarily cover every image hosted by that wiki.

== Official Frontier media ==
Official Frontier promotional artwork, press images, concept art, logos, marketing graphics, and similar material are not the same thing as contributor-captured in-game screenshots.

Their use should be evaluated separately under Frontier's applicable media rules and EDFM's broader legal policies.

Where an original in-game screenshot can adequately illustrate an article, it is generally preferred over copying official promotional material.

Frontier's official corporate logo and proprietary Frontier fonts must not be used as EDFM branding unless separately authorized.

== AI-generated and synthetic images ==
Do not use AI-generated, AI-reconstructed, or otherwise synthetic imagery as factual representations of:

* ships;
* Engineers;
* characters;
* locations;
* stations or facilities;
* user interfaces;
* modules or equipment;
* gameplay states; or
* anything else EDFM documents as an in-game fact.

An AI-generated image of "Broo Tarquin," "an Anaconda," or a particular station is not evidence of what that subject actually looks like in ''Elite Dangerous''.

Synthetic imagery must not be presented in a way that could reasonably cause readers to mistake it for an authentic in-game capture.

This does not prohibit narrowly scoped illustrative or diagrammatic use where factual visual accuracy is not the purpose of the image.

Any permitted synthetic image must be clearly identified as '''AI-generated''', '''synthetic''', or otherwise non-authentic on its file page and wherever additional labeling is necessary to prevent confusion.

Where an actual screenshot can reasonably illustrate the subject, use the screenshot instead.

== Edited and annotated images ==
Reasonable edits to otherwise acceptable images are permitted when they improve clarity or protect privacy.

Examples include:

* cropping;
* resizing;
* redacting private information;
* adding arrows, boxes, labels, or callouts;
* adjusting brightness or contrast for readability; and
* combining multiple screenshots for an instructional comparison.

Edits must not materially misrepresent what the game actually displayed or imply that altered content is an authentic, unmodified game screen.

Substantial edits, composites, reconstructions, or annotations that could reasonably be mistaken for an unmodified screenshot should be disclosed in the file Summary or article caption.

== Misleading imagery ==
Do not deliberately alter, crop, annotate, or select images in a way that materially misrepresents:

* game mechanics;
* statistics;
* interface messages;
* player actions;
* system states;
* bugs;
* transactions;
* engineering values;
* Powerplay conditions;
* Background Simulation conditions; or
* other factual claims.

When an image is being used as evidence for a factual statement, preserve enough context for the image to support the claim being made.

== Personal information and player identifiers ==
Images must not unnecessarily expose private or sensitive information.

See [[Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Screenshot Policy]] for the site's mechanical rules concerning sensitive information in uploads.

In general, contributors should review images for information such as:

* email addresses;
* real names where disclosure is not intended;
* private messages;
* authentication information;
* account identifiers;
* access or authorization tokens;
* billing or payment information; and
* other information that a reasonable person would not expect to be published.

In-game Commander names, squadron names, Fleet Carrier names, and similar identifiers that naturally appear during ordinary public gameplay are not automatically prohibited.

However, avoid displaying another person's identifier where it is irrelevant to the article, exposes private communications, or could reasonably facilitate harassment or an unnecessary public call-out.

== Watermarks and attribution ==
Do not remove another creator's watermark, attribution, copyright notice, or other rights-management information in order to reuse an image.

Images carrying third-party branding or watermarks should normally be replaced with an original EDFM capture unless use of that specific image is necessary and authorized.

EDFM may apply restrained project attribution to media created specifically for EDFM where appropriate, but such markings must not imply that EDFM owns Frontier's underlying game assets.

== Licensing classifications available ==
== Licensing classifications available ==
See [[Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Adding an Image]] for the full walkthrough. There is deliberately no generic "unknown" or "fair use" option on this wiki — every upload needs an actual classification from the Licensing dropdown on
Special:Upload
.
See [[Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Adding an Image]] for the full image-upload walkthrough and available classifications.

There is deliberately no generic '''unknown''' classification.

EDFM also does not provide a generic '''fair use''' upload category. This is an editorial policy: uploads must have known provenance and an applicable EDFM classification rather than relying on an unspecified legal exception.

If an unusual use genuinely depends on a legal exception or another basis not represented by the existing classifications, do not force it into an inaccurate category. Raise it for administrative review before uploading.

== If the source or license is uncertain ==
When provenance or licensing cannot be established with reasonable confidence:

'''Do not upload the image.'''

If the subject can be captured in-game, create a new original screenshot instead.

If an already-uploaded image later turns out to have unclear provenance, administrators may remove or replace it while its status is reviewed.

Removal in that situation does not necessarily imply misconduct by the uploader; replacing uncertain media with a clean original capture is often simply the safest and easiest solution.

Where images on EDFM are allowed to come from, and how they are classified and licensed. See Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Screenshot Policy for mechanical upload rules such as file formats, size limits, and information that must not be exposed. This page covers image sourcing, provenance, and licensing.

Preferred source: original captures

EDFM prefers screenshots captured directly by EDFM contributors from their own gameplay.

Original captures provide the clearest provenance and make it easier to verify:

 • what the image actually depicts;
 • where it came from;
 • when it was captured, where that matters;
 • whether it accurately reflects the game; and
 • whether the uploader has authority to provide the file to EDFM.

If EDFM does not yet have a useful screenshot of something, the preferred solution is normally to capture a new one in-game.

Do not copy images from elsewhere without authorization

Do not upload images copied from Fandom, Reddit, Discord, YouTube, other wikis, forums, social-media sites, community websites, search results, or other third-party sources merely because they are publicly available or appear to be "free to use."

Third-party images may only be used where their license or the rights holder's permission clearly authorizes EDFM's use, as described below.

"Found on Google" is not a valid source. A reverse-image search or ordinary web search may help identify where an image appears, but it does not establish who created the image, who owns the relevant rights, or what license applies to it.

When a comparable image can reasonably be captured directly in-game, an original EDFM capture is preferred.

Do not assume an image shares a webpage's license

A Creative Commons license displayed on a wiki, blog, gallery, or other webpage does not by itself prove that every image appearing on that page is available under the same license.

Images may have their own:

 • copyright holders;
 • licenses;
 • permissions;
 • attribution requirements; or
 • restrictions.

Always verify the provenance and licensing of the individual image rather than relying on the license shown for the surrounding website or article.

This is particularly important for screenshots containing Elite Dangerous game assets. A third-party website cannot grant rights in Frontier-owned material merely by applying a Creative Commons license to its own original content.

The same principle applies on EDFM: an image appearing on a page containing CC BY-SA 4.0 text is not automatically covered by EDFM's text license.

Elite Dangerous screenshots use the Frontier/game-media classification

A screenshot personally captured from Elite Dangerous contains Frontier-owned game content, including ships, characters, interface elements, environments, artwork, and other game assets.

Those underlying game assets belong to Frontier Developments plc and/or their applicable rights holders, not to the person who pressed the screenshot key.

On EDFM, screenshots captured directly from the game should therefore be classified as:

Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot

using {{License-ED screenshot}}, selected through the Licensing dropdown on Special:Upload.

They should not be classified merely as "own work" or placed under EDFM's CC BY-SA 4.0 text license.

The fact that a contributor personally captured a screenshot may still be recorded in the file's Summary and attribution information, but that does not transfer ownership of Frontier's underlying game assets.

See Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Legal and Trademark Notice for the broader copyright and trademark context.

File pages describe the asset, not the subject

Every file page should contain two separate kinds of information, deliberately kept apart:

 • Summary — created using {{EDFM image information}}. This describes the image itself: what it depicts, its media type, who captured or created it, how it has been modified, what it is intended for, and who owns the underlying material.
 • Licensing — generated from the classification selected through the Licensing dropdown on Special:Upload. This identifies the legal or editorial basis under which EDFM is hosting the image.

Neither section should duplicate the subject's main article.

For example, the file page for an Engineer portrait should describe the image and its provenance. It should not repeat that Engineer's location, unlock requirements, specialties, or gameplay guidance. That information belongs on the Engineer's article.

See {{EDFM image information}} documentation for the full field list.

Third-party media requires a verified basis for use

If you want to upload an image you did not create and that is not a screenshot you personally captured, there must be a clearly established basis for EDFM to use it.

Acceptable bases include:

 • a compatible license whose terms are stated and verifiable; or
 • explicit permission from the actual rights holder.

Images used with explicit permission should be classified with {{License-Used with permission}} and should retain enough information to demonstrate where that permission came from if its use is later questioned.

Do not assume that permission from the person who uploaded an image somewhere else is sufficient unless that person actually owns or controls the relevant rights.

If the provenance, license, or permission cannot be established, do not upload the image.

Fandom and other community wikis

The Elite Dangerous Fandom wiki and other community resources may be used as research sources and cited where appropriate.

Official Frontier media

Official Frontier promotional artwork, press images, concept art, logos, marketing graphics, and similar material are not the same thing as contributor-captured in-game screenshots.

Their use should be evaluated separately under Frontier's applicable media rules and EDFM's broader legal policies.

Where an original in-game screenshot can adequately illustrate an article, it is generally preferred over copying official promotional material.

Frontier's official corporate logo and proprietary Frontier fonts must not be used as EDFM branding unless separately authorized.

AI-generated and synthetic images

Do not use AI-generated, AI-reconstructed, or otherwise synthetic imagery as factual representations of:

 • ships;
 • Engineers;
 • characters;
 • locations;
 • stations or facilities;
 • user interfaces;
 • modules or equipment;
 • gameplay states; or
 • anything else EDFM documents as an in-game fact.

An AI-generated image of "Broo Tarquin," "an Anaconda," or a particular station is not evidence of what that subject actually looks like in Elite Dangerous.

Synthetic imagery must not be presented in a way that could reasonably cause readers to mistake it for an authentic in-game capture.

This does not prohibit narrowly scoped illustrative or diagrammatic use where factual visual accuracy is not the purpose of the image.

Any permitted synthetic image must be clearly identified as AI-generated, synthetic, or otherwise non-authentic on its file page and wherever additional labeling is necessary to prevent confusion.

Where an actual screenshot can reasonably illustrate the subject, use the screenshot instead.

Edited and annotated images

Reasonable edits to otherwise acceptable images are permitted when they improve clarity or protect privacy.

Examples include:

 • cropping;
 • resizing;
 • redacting private information;
 • adding arrows, boxes, labels, or callouts;
 • adjusting brightness or contrast for readability; and
 • combining multiple screenshots for an instructional comparison.

Misleading imagery

Do not deliberately alter, crop, annotate, or select images in a way that materially misrepresents:

 • game mechanics;
 • statistics;
 • interface messages;
 • player actions;
 • system states;
 • bugs;
 • transactions;
 • engineering values;
 • Powerplay conditions;
 • Background Simulation conditions; or
 • other factual claims.

When an image is being used as evidence for a factual statement, preserve enough context for the image to support the claim being made.

Personal information and player identifiers

Images must not unnecessarily expose private or sensitive information.

See Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Screenshot Policy for the site's mechanical rules concerning sensitive information in uploads.

In general, contributors should review images for information such as:

 • email addresses;
 • real names where disclosure is not intended;
 • private messages;
 • authentication information;
 • account identifiers;
 • access or authorization tokens;
 • billing or payment information; and
 • other information that a reasonable person would not expect to be published.

Watermarks and attribution

Do not remove another creator's watermark, attribution, copyright notice, or other rights-management information in order to reuse an image.

Images carrying third-party branding or watermarks should normally be replaced with an original EDFM capture unless use of that specific image is necessary and authorized.

EDFM may apply restrained project attribution to media created specifically for EDFM where appropriate, but such markings must not imply that EDFM owns Frontier's underlying game assets.

Licensing classifications available

See Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Adding an Image for the full image-upload walkthrough and available classifications.

There is deliberately no generic unknown classification.

EDFM also does not provide a generic fair use upload category.

If the source or license is uncertain

When provenance or licensing cannot be established with reasonable confidence:

Do not upload the image.

Reporting a licensing or provenance problem

If you believe an image on EDFM:

 • belongs to you and is being used without permission;
 • has been incorrectly attributed;
 • is using an incorrect license or classification;
 • contains material that EDFM does not have permission to use; or
 • otherwise raises a copyright, licensing, or provenance concern,
