EDFM // Engineering / Engineers
A Grade 5 Cannon and limpet-controller specialist based at The Beach in Beta-3 Tucani, reached through Juri Ishmaak.
The Sarge is a ship Engineer based at The Beach in the Beta-3 Tucani system. He is reached through Juri Ishmaak and specialises in Cannons and several types of limpet controller.[1]
The Sarge provides Grade 5 Cannon Engineering and Grade 5 Engineering for Collector, Fuel Transfer, Hatch Breaker, and Prospector Limpet Controllers. He also provides Rail Gun Engineering through Grade 3.[1]
In Live, his Rail Gun coverage includes the Operations-era Enduring Feedback blueprint through Grade 3 for compatible Merc modules.[2]

- Body: Beta-3 Tucani 2 b a
- Engineer type: Ship Engineer
- Referral required: Juri Ishmaak
- System permit required: No
The Beach is a surface Engineer base on Beta-3 Tucani 2 b a.[3]
How to Discover The Sarge
The Sarge is discovered through Juri Ishmaak.
Reach Grade 3 access and progress at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Juri to receive his referral to The Sarge.[4]
Juri can also refer Commanders to Colonel Bris Dekker. The Sarge and Bris Dekker are therefore parallel referrals rather than one being required for the other.
Field note
Receiving Juri's referral makes The Sarge known to you. His separate Federal Navy rank requirement must still be satisfied before his workshop can be unlocked.
How to Receive an Invitation
Reach the Federal Navy rank of Midshipman or higher.[1]
This is a Federal Navy progression requirement, not simply reputation with a Federation-aligned minor faction.
See Federal Navy Rank for how Federal Navy progression works, how rank progress is earned, and how to check your current rank.
Important
The requirement is specifically Midshipman or higher with the Federal Navy. Ordinary Federation reputation by itself does not replace the naval-rank requirement.
How to Unlock The Sarge
Unlock requirements summary:
- Reach Grade 3 access and at least one-third progress toward Grade 4 with Juri Ishmaak.
- Reach Midshipman or higher in Federal Navy Rank.
- Obtain 50 units of Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis.
- Donate the 50 Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis to The Sarge.
Important
Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis is Encoded Engineering data. It is not a commodity and does not occupy cargo space.
For the complete step-by-step process, see Unlocking The Sarge.
Obtaining Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis
Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis is an Encoded material in the Shield Data family.[5]
Current material data lists its normal acquisition sources as:
- scanning combat-oriented ships; and
- mission rewards.[5]
It has a higher chance of appearing from appropriate ship scans in systems in a Boom state.[5]
Because it is an Encoded material, it can also be obtained by trading other Encoded materials at an Encoded Material Trader.
Tip
If you already have a large stock of higher-value or unwanted Encoded data, using an Encoded Material Trader can be considerably faster than attempting to gather all 50 Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis directly from ship scans.
See Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis for acquisition methods and Material Traders for material-conversion mechanics.
Field note
You can collect the required data before travelling to Beta-3 Tucani. Unlike commodity-based Engineer unlocks, no cargo rack is required to transport it.
Field note
Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after The Sarge is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]
Increasing Engineer Reputation
Reputation with The Sarge can be increased by:
- crafting Engineering modifications at The Beach;
- selling exploration data at The Beach; or
- handing in bounty vouchers at The Beach.[1]
Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades The Sarge supports for each blueprint.
The Sarge does not currently provide a referral to another Engineer.
See Engineer Reputation for how ship Engineer reputation, grade access, blueprint progression, referrals, and alternative reputation methods work.
Tip
Selling exploration data at The Beach can be useful if you want to increase The Sarge's reputation without spending Engineering materials exclusively on repeated modifications.
Engineer Unlock Chain
The Sarge belongs to the Felicity Farseer branch of the ship Engineer network.
The route to The Sarge is:
Felicity Farseer
└── Juri Ishmaak
└── The Sarge
Juri also provides a referral to Colonel Bris Dekker:
Felicity Farseer

└── The Sarge
The Sarge does not currently lead to another Engineer in the active ship Engineer referral network.[6]
Field note
The Sarge and Colonel Bris Dekker are parallel referrals from Juri Ishmaak. Unlocking one is not required before unlocking the other.
See Engineer Unlock Guide for the complete referral network.
Available Engineering
The Sarge's current Engineering coverage is shown below. The listed grade is the highest grade he can apply to that module.[1]

The Sarge's maximum-grade specialties are therefore Cannons and four types of limpet controller.
His Rail Gun Engineering stops at Grade 3.
Operations-era Enduring Feedback Rail Gun
The Operations-era Engineering system added the Enduring Feedback Rail Gun blueprint.[7]
Enduring Feedback trades damage, mass, and power requirements for changes to firing rate, thermal load, range, ammunition capacity, and reload behaviour. It also incorporates a Feedback Cascade effect.[2]
The Sarge can apply Enduring Feedback through Grade 3.
For Grade 4 and Grade 5 Enduring Feedback Engineering, use:
Important
Field note
The built-in Feedback Cascade property is part of the Enduring Feedback blueprint itself. Feedback Cascade also exists separately as a conventional Rail Gun Experimental Effect.
Experimental Effects
Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint.
Among The Sarge's supported module types, Cannons and Rail Guns support Experimental Effects.
Collector, Fuel Transfer, Hatch Breaker, and Prospector Limpet Controllers do not currently have Experimental Effects.[8]
Cannon
Available Cannon Experimental Effects include:[9]
- Auto Loader
- Dispersal Field
- Double Braced
- Flow Control
- Force Shell
- High Yield Shell
- Multi-servos
- Oversized
- Smart Rounds
- Stripped Down
- Thermal Cascade
Rail Gun
Available Rail Gun Experimental Effects include:[10]
- Double Braced
- Feedback Cascade
- Flow Control
- Multi-servos
- Oversized
- Plasma Slug
- Stripped Down
- Super Penetrator
See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.
Field note
The Sarge can apply a compatible Rail Gun Experimental Effect even to a Rail Gun whose main blueprint has been engineered beyond his Grade 3 limit by another Rail Gun Engineer.
Important
Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The weapon must be taken to an Engineer who works on that weapon type.
Recommended Engineering
The Sarge has two distinct roles: maximum-grade Cannon Engineering and maximum-grade limpet-controller Engineering.
Cannons
The Sarge provides every conventional Cannon blueprint through Grade 5.
Cannons have high individual shot damage and armour penetration but relatively slow projectiles, so blueprint choice depends heavily on the intended range and weapon role.
Overcharged
Overcharged Cannon increases direct damage at the cost of additional distributor draw and thermal load.
Tip
Common damage-focused choice: Overcharged
For a Cannon intended primarily to deliver heavy direct damage, Overcharged is a strong general-purpose starting point.
The best Experimental Effect then depends on what the Cannon is intended to do.
Useful Cannon Experimental Effects include:
- Auto Loader for reloading while firing;
- Dispersal Field for disrupting enemy gimbal and turret tracking;
- Force Shell for physically pushing targets;
- High Yield Shell for specialised internal-module damage;
- Oversized for a small additional damage increase; and
- Thermal Cascade for applying heat pressure to shielded targets.
Long Range
Long Range Cannon is useful where the Cannon's relatively slow projectile velocity and limited effective engagement distance are a problem.
Increasing projectile speed can make it easier to land shots against manoeuvring targets, particularly at greater distances.
The appropriate choice between Long Range and a direct-damage blueprint therefore depends on how the weapon is actually being used.
Limpet Controllers
The Sarge provides Grade 5 Engineering for:
- Collector Limpet Controllers;
- Fuel Transfer Limpet Controllers;
- Hatch Breaker Limpet Controllers; and
- Prospector Limpet Controllers.
All four use the same three conventional blueprint families:
- Lightweight
- Reinforced
- Shielded
Lightweight
Lightweight substantially reduces controller mass at the cost of module integrity.
For a Collector Limpet Controller, Grade 5 Lightweight currently provides:
- -85% mass
- -50% integrity[8]
Tip
Common utility choice: Lightweight
For mining, exploration, salvage, and other ships where the limpet controller is not expected to take significant direct damage, Lightweight is often the most practically useful modification.
Large limpet controllers can contribute substantial module mass, so the Grade 5 mass reduction can be significant.
Reinforced and Shielded are more specialised options for builds where controller survivability matters more than reducing mass.
Field note
Each limpet-controller type has its own blueprint. Pinning Lightweight Collector Limpet Controller does not allow Remote Engineering of a Prospector, Fuel Transfer, or Hatch Breaker Limpet Controller.
Rail Guns
The Sarge provides conventional Rail Gun Engineering only through Grade 3.
He can still be useful for intermediate Rail Gun Engineering or for applying Experimental Effects, but maximum-grade conventional Rail Gun builds should normally use Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn or Etienne Dorn.
Common specialised Rail Gun Experimental Effects include:
- Feedback Cascade for disrupting Shield Cell Bank operation;
- Super Penetrator for damaging modules along the projectile's path; and
- Plasma Slug for drawing ammunition from the ship's fuel supply.
Blueprint Pinning
After earning sufficient reputation with The Sarge, one of his blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.
Tip
EDFM recommendation: If you use Cannons, Overcharged Cannon is a strong blueprint to consider pinning at The Sarge.
The Sarge is the primary Bubble Engineer providing conventional Cannon Engineering through Grade 5, while his Grade 5 limpet-controller blueprints are also available from several other Engineers.
For Commanders who rarely or never use Cannons, a frequently used Grade 5 limpet-controller blueprint — particularly Lightweight Collector Limpet Controller — may provide more practical value instead.
The best pin therefore depends strongly on whether Cannons form part of your normal ship builds.
Important
A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Cannon and Rail Gun Experimental Effects still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.
What The Sarge Cannot Fully Engineer
The Sarge provides maximum-grade Engineering for most of the module types he supports.
His maximum grades are:
- Cannon: Grade 5
- Collector Limpet Controller: Grade 5
- Fuel Transfer Limpet Controller: Grade 5
- Hatch Breaker Limpet Controller: Grade 5
- Prospector Limpet Controller: Grade 5
- Rail Gun: Grade 3[1]
For Grade 5 Rail Gun Engineering:
- Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn provides Grade 5 conventional Rail Gun Engineering in the Bubble.
- Etienne Dorn provides Grade 5 Rail Gun Engineering in Colonia.[6]
For alternative Grade 5 limpet-controller Engineering:
- Tiana Fortune provides Grade 5 Collector, Fuel Transfer, Hatch Breaker, and Prospector Limpet Controller Engineering.
- Marsha Hicks provides Grade 5 Collector, Fuel Transfer, Hatch Breaker, and Prospector Limpet Controller Engineering in Colonia.[6]
For Grade 5 Cannon Engineering, Marsha Hicks is the principal Colonia alternative.
The Sarge is therefore particularly valuable as the Bubble's Grade 5 Cannon specialist while also providing maximum-grade access to four major limpet-controller types.
What Next?
The Sarge is the end of his Engineer referral branch and does not currently introduce another Engineer.
