Before you upload, read Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Image Use Policy — in short: only upload images you personally captured or created, never something copied from Fandom, Reddit, Discord, YouTube, another wiki, or a search-engine image result.

Which Licensing option do I pick?

Almost every upload to this wiki will be an ordinary gameplay screenshot — pick "Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot" unless you have a specific reason not to:

  • Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot — the normal choice. A screenshot you captured yourself: an Engineer headshot, a ship, a station or facility, a UI element, a location, anything captured from within the game.
  • Official Frontier / Elite Dangerous media — only for media Frontier Developments itself released (press kit assets, official screenshots, promotional art) — not something you captured in-game.
  • Original work — creator retains copyright — a diagram or graphic you made, not a screenshot of the game (e.g. a hand-drawn route map).
  • CC BY 4.0 / CC BY-SA 4.0 — original work you made and are deliberately releasing under a Creative Commons license.
  • Used with explicit permission — someone else's image, used with their explicit, documented permission. Rare — most uploads shouldn't need this.
  • Public domain — genuinely public domain (expired copyright, government work, etc.), with the reason stated in the description. Not a fallback for "I don't know the license," and not correct for game assets, which aren't public domain.

There is deliberately no generic "unknown" or "fair use" option — every upload needs one of the classifications above.

For an ordinary screenshot, use {{Elite Dangerous screenshot}}

After picking "Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot" above, add {{Elite Dangerous screenshot}} to the description box with a few details filled in — this records the useful metadata and automatically handles the Frontier attribution wording, so you don't need to type any of that out by hand. For example, a Professor Palin headshot captured in-game:

{{Elite Dangerous screenshot
 |description = Professor Palin portrait/headshot
 |subject = Professor Palin
 |captured_by = Your commander name
 |capture_date = 2026-08-08
 |game_version = Live
 |location = Abel Laboratory, Arque
}}
