A Surface Recon Vehicle (SRV) is a player-operated ground vehicle used by Commanders for activities on planetary surfaces. SRVs are transported aboard compatible ships using vehicle hangars and can be deployed after landing on suitable terrain.[1]
Overview
Surface Recon Vehicles extend a Commander's capabilities beyond their ship, providing ground transportation and specialized equipment for planetary activities. Frontier describes SRVs as lightweight, all-terrain wheeled vehicles designed for exploring planetary surfaces, while also noting their usefulness for combat and surface charting.[1]
Different SRVs emphasize different roles. The Scarab is the established general-purpose SRV for surface traversal and exploration, the Scorpion is oriented toward surface combat, and the Rhino has been announced as a larger SRV focused on surface mining.[2]
SRVs can support activities such as planetary traversal, exploration, raw material collection, settlement interaction, combat, and specialized resource extraction. Not every SRV is intended equally for every role.

Scarab
The Scarab is a general-purpose Surface Recon Vehicle intended for planetary traversal, exploration, material collection, and other surface activities. It represents the standard SRV role described by Frontier's equipment overview: a lightweight, all-terrain wheeled vehicle for exploring and charting planetary surfaces.[1]
Scorpion
The Scorpion is a combat-oriented Surface Recon Vehicle designed for situations where surface combat is more important than the Scarab's general-purpose exploration role. It is used as an SRV for ground operations and is carried in a Planetary Vehicle Hangar.
Rhino
The Rhino is a large Vodel Surface Recon Vehicle designed primarily for surface mining. It supports up to three Commanders and uses the Large Planetary Vehicle Hangar. Frontier has scheduled the Rhino for release on 2 September 2026.[2]
Vehicle hangars
Surface Recon Vehicles are transported aboard ships using vehicle hangar modules. The Scarab and Scorpion use the Planetary Vehicle Hangar. The Rhino uses the larger Large Planetary Vehicle Hangar.
