EDFM // Engineering / Engineers
A Grade 5 Thruster specialist based at Cinder Dock in Shenve, reached through Marco Qwent after travelling at least 5,000 light-years from your career start location.
Chloe Sedesi is a ship Engineer based at Cinder Dock in the Shenve system, in the Witch Head region. She is reached through Marco Qwent and is best known for providing Grade 5 Thruster Engineering. She also provides Frame Shift Drive Engineering through Grade 3.[1][2]
Chloe provides the same maximum Engineering grades as Professor Palin: Grade 5 Thrusters and Grade 3 Frame Shift Drives. Both Engineers are separate referrals from Marco Qwent rather than one being unlocked through the other.[3]
Field note
Chloe and Professor Palin have very similar access requirements and Engineering capabilities, but they are parallel Engineers. Unlocking Palin does not unlock Chloe, and unlocking Chloe does not unlock Palin.
Location
- System: Shenve
- Facility: Cinder Dock
- Engineer type: Ship Engineer
- Referral required: Marco Qwent
- System permit required: No
- Region: Witch Head
Cinder Dock is a surface facility in Shenve. Chloe's workshop was established in the Witch Head region as part of the expansion of human infrastructure there.[4]
Field note
Shenve is considerably farther from the core inhabited Bubble than most early ship Engineers. Plan for the additional travel before heading to Cinder Dock.
How to Discover Chloe Sedesi
Chloe Sedesi is discovered through Marco Qwent.
Reach Grade 3 access and progress at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Marco to receive his referral to Chloe.[2]
Field note
Receiving Marco's referral and satisfying Chloe's 5,000-light-year meeting requirement are separate conditions. The referral does not replace the distance requirement.
How to Receive an Invitation
Reach a maximum distance of at least 5,000 light-years from your career start location.[1]
This is a distance-from-start requirement, not a cumulative travel requirement. Flying a total of 5,000 Ly through many shorter trips does not satisfy it unless your recorded maximum distance from your career start location reaches at least 5,000 Ly.
Checking your distance from your starting location
You can check your progress directly in-game:
- Open the right-hand cockpit panel.
- Select Codex.
- Open the Commander section.
- Select Stats.
- Open the Exploration statistics.
- Find Max Distance From Start.[5]
The value shown under Max Distance From Start is the relevant statistic for Chloe's requirement. Do not confuse it with your total hyperspace distance travelled.
Important
You need the Max Distance From Start value to reach at least 5,000 Ly. You do not need to travel 5,000 Ly outward and then another 5,000 Ly back before the requirement counts. Once your maximum-distance statistic has reached 5,000 Ly, the distance requirement has been satisfied.
You only need to reach the required distance; you do not need to remain 5,000 Ly away after the condition has been recorded.
Tip
The same 5,000-Ly maximum-distance requirement is used by Professor Palin. If you intend to unlock both Engineers, one qualifying journey can satisfy the distance requirement for both.
How to Unlock Chloe Sedesi
To gain access to Chloe's Engineering workshop:
- Reach Grade 3 access and at least one-third progress toward Grade 4 with Marco Qwent.
- Receive Marco's referral to Chloe Sedesi.
- Reach a maximum distance of at least 5,000 Ly from your career start location.
- Obtain 25 Sensor Fragments.
- Travel to Cinder Dock in Shenve.
- Provide the 25 Sensor Fragments to Chloe Sedesi.
- Enter the Engineer workshop and begin increasing your reputation with Chloe.
Important
Sensor Fragments are very rare Manufactured Engineering materials of Thargoid origin. They are not commodities and do not occupy normal cargo space.[6]
Obtaining Sensor Fragments
Sensor Fragments are pieces of Thargoid Sensors. Current material data lists them as obtainable from:
- destroyed Thargoid Sensors;
- Non-Human Signal Sources; and
- Thargoid sites.[6]
See Sensor Fragments for current collection methods and recommended locations.
Field note
Professor Palin also requires 25 Sensor Fragments. Unlocking one Engineer does not satisfy the other's donation requirement. If you plan to unlock both, you will need enough Sensor Fragments for both unlocks.
Field note
Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after Chloe is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]
Increasing Engineer Reputation
Reputation with Chloe Sedesi can be increased by:
- crafting Engineering modifications at Cinder Dock; or
- selling exploration data at Cinder Dock.[1][2]
Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Chloe supports for each blueprint.
See Engineer Reputation for how ship Engineer reputation, grade access, blueprint progression, referrals, and alternative reputation methods work.
Tip
If your 5,000-light-year journey generated exploration data, consider saving some of it until after Chloe is unlocked. Selling it at Cinder Dock can help increase your Engineer reputation without relying entirely on repeated Engineering rolls.
Engineer Unlock Chain
Chloe Sedesi belongs to the Elvira Martuuk branch of the ship Engineer network.
The route to Chloe is:
Elvira Martuuk
└── Marco Qwent
└── Chloe Sedesi
Marco Qwent can also refer Commanders to Professor Palin and Lori Jameson:
Elvira Martuuk
└── Marco Qwent
├── Chloe Sedesi
├── Lori Jameson
└── Professor Palin
Chloe Sedesi does not currently lead to another Engineer in the ship Engineer referral network.[3]
Field note
Professor Palin is not unlocked through Chloe Sedesi. Chloe and Palin are separate referrals from Marco Qwent, despite having the same maximum module grades and similar unlock requirements.
See Engineer Unlock Guide for the complete referral network.
Available Engineering
Chloe's Engineering coverage is shown below. The listed grade is the highest grade she can apply to that module.[1]
| Module | Available blueprints | Maximum grade |
|---|---|---|
| Thrusters |
|
Grade 5 |
| Frame Shift Drive |
|
Grade 3 |
Chloe's primary specialty is therefore Thrusters. Her Frame Shift Drive capability is useful for lower-grade work and Experimental Effects, but Commanders seeking Grade 5 FSD Engineering will need another Engineer.
Experimental Effects
Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible module can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.
Chloe can apply Experimental Effects to both Thrusters and Frame Shift Drives.
Thrusters
Available Thruster Experimental Effects include:[7]
Frame Shift Drive
Available Frame Shift Drive Experimental Effects include:[8]
See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.
Field note
Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The module must be taken to an Engineer who works on that module.
Recommended Engineering
Chloe's most important capability is her Grade 5 Thruster Engineering.
Tip
Common general-purpose choice: Dirty + Drag Drives
For many ships, Dirty Thruster Engineering combined with the Drag Drives Experimental Effect is a strong general-purpose choice when maximum speed, boost speed, and manoeuvrability are the priority.
This is a recommendation rather than a universal rule. Clean, Reinforced, or a different Experimental Effect may be more appropriate for specialised builds.
Dirty Engineering increases Thruster performance while increasing power draw and thermal load and reducing module integrity. The tradeoffs increase at higher grades.[9]
Field note
Drag Drives and Drive Distributors modify Thruster performance in different ways. Drag Drives is not automatically the best Experimental Effect for every ship and Thruster combination; very mass-sensitive configurations can benefit differently depending on the module's optimal-mass curve.
Blueprint Pinning
After earning sufficient reputation with Chloe, one of her blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Clean Thrusters is a useful blueprint to pin at Chloe if Professor Palin is already being used to pin Dirty Thrusters.
Both Chloe and Palin provide Grade 5 Thruster Engineering, which makes the pair useful for keeping two different Grade 5 Thruster blueprints available through Remote Engineering.
If Dirty Thrusters is more useful for your fleet and is not already pinned elsewhere, there is no requirement to use the Clean blueprint simply because Chloe can provide it. Blueprint pinning should reflect the modules and builds you actually use.
Important
A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Experimental Effects still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.
What Chloe Cannot Fully Engineer
Chloe provides maximum-grade Engineering for Thrusters, but her Frame Shift Drive Engineering stops at Grade 3.
Her maximum grades are:
- Thrusters: Grade 5
- Frame Shift Drive: Grade 3[1]
For higher-grade Frame Shift Drive Engineering:
- Felicity Farseer provides Grade 5 FSD Engineering.
- Elvira Martuuk provides Grade 5 FSD Engineering.
- Mel Brandon provides Grade 5 FSD Engineering in Colonia.[3]
Other Engineers who provide Grade 5 Thruster Engineering include:
Chloe is therefore one of the primary maximum-grade Thruster Engineers, but she is not a maximum-grade FSD Engineer.
What Next?
Chloe Sedesi is the end of her referral branch and does not currently introduce another Engineer.
After unlocking her, your next Engineering target depends on which modules you still need to improve.
