Marco Qwent is a ship Engineer based at Qwent Research Base in the permit-locked Sirius system. Unlike the independent starting Engineers, Marco must first be discovered through Elvira Martuuk.[1]

Qwent specialises in ship power systems. He provides Grade 4 Power Plant Engineering and Grade 3 Power Distributor Engineering.[1]

He is also an important progression Engineer because reputation with Marco leads to Professor Palin, Chloe Sedesi, and Lori Jameson.[2]

Field note

Unlocking Marco is more involved than simply receiving Elvira's referral. The Sirius system is permit-locked, and Marco also requires an invitation from Sirius Corporation before his workshop can be accessed.

Location

Sirius is a permit-locked system, so the system permit must be obtained before Qwent Research Base can be reached.[3]

How to Discover Marco Qwent

Marco Qwent is discovered through Elvira Martuuk.

Reach Grade 3 access and progress at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Elvira to receive her referral to Marco.[4]

Field note

Receiving Elvira's referral makes Marco known to you. It does not grant access to Sirius or automatically unlock his workshop.

How to Receive an Invitation

Marco requires an invitation from Sirius Corporation.[1]

The practical progression is:

  1. Receive the referral to Marco from Elvira Martuuk.
  2. Become Allied with Sirius Corporation.
  3. Obtain the Sirius system permit.
  4. Travel to Sirius.
  5. Complete the Sirius Corporation Engineer invitation mission for Marco Qwent.

Current New Pilots Initiative guidance lists Allied reputation with Sirius Corporation as the requirement for obtaining the necessary Sirius access and Engineer invitation.[4]

Important

The Sirius system permit and Marco Qwent's Engineer invitation are separate pieces of the access process. Having Elvira's referral alone does not allow you to enter Sirius, and having the system permit alone does not replace Marco's Engineer invitation.

How to Unlock Marco Qwent

Unlock requirements summary:

Important

Modular Terminals are a commodity. They are not Raw, Manufactured, or Encoded Engineering materials. Each unit occupies cargo space, so transporting all 25 at once requires at least 25 tonnes of cargo capacity.

For the complete step-by-step process, see Unlocking Marco Qwent.

Obtaining Modular Terminals

Modular Terminals are primarily obtained as mission rewards.[5]

They may also be sold by player-owned Fleet Carriers, although carrier supply and pricing are controlled by individual Commanders and can change at any time.[4]

Tip

If you plan to collect all 25 Modular Terminals before travelling to Sirius, fit at least 25 tonnes of cargo capacity before beginning the final part of Marco's unlock.

Because Fleet Carrier inventories can change quickly, use current market information rather than relying on a carrier location listed in an older guide.

Field note

Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after Marco is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]

Increasing Engineer Reputation

Reputation with Marco Qwent can be increased by:

  • crafting Engineering modifications at his workshop; or
  • selling commodities at Qwent Research Base.[1]

Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Marco supports for each blueprint.

Tip

If you are carrying ordinary saleable commodities after completing Marco's unlock, selling them at Qwent Research Base can supplement the reputation gained from Engineering rolls.

Engineer Unlock Chain

Marco Qwent is part of the Elvira Martuuk branch of the ship Engineer network.

The route to Marco is:

Elvira Martuuk
└── Marco Qwent

After reaching Grade 3 access and progressing at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Marco, he can provide referrals to three later Engineers:[4]

The wider branch is:

Elvira Martuuk
├── Zacariah Nemo
├── Marco Qwent
│ ├── Chloe Sedesi
│ ├── Lori Jameson
│ └── Professor Palin
└── Mel Brandon [Colonia]

Current Engineer data lists Professor Palin, Chloe Sedesi, and Lori Jameson as being discovered through Marco Qwent.[2]

Field note

A referral from Marco does not automatically unlock the referred Engineer. Professor Palin, Chloe Sedesi, and Lori Jameson each have additional meeting and unlock requirements.

See Engineer Unlock Guide for the complete referral network.

Available Engineering

Marco's Engineering coverage is shown below. The listed grade is the highest grade he can apply to that module.[1]

Module Available blueprints Maximum grade
Power Plant
  • Armoured
  • Low Emissions
  • Overcharged
Grade 4
Power Distributor
  • Balanced (Live only; compatible Merc modules)
  • Charge Enhanced
  • Engine Focused
  • High Charge Capacity
  • Shielded
  • Support Focused (Live only; compatible Merc modules)
  • System Focused
  • Weapon Focused
Grade 3

Operations-era Power Distributor Engineering

Two of the Power Distributor blueprints in the current Live game were added with the Operations-era Engineering additions:

  • Balanced
  • Support Focused

Both can be applied by Marco through Grade 3.[6][7]

Important

Live only: Balanced and Support Focused were introduced as part of the Operations-era Power Distributor additions and can only be applied to compatible Merc modules. They are not part of the Legacy Engineering system.[8]

The established Power Distributor blueprints — Charge Enhanced, Engine Focused, High Charge Capacity, Shielded, System Focused, and Weapon Focused — remain available to Marco through Grade 3.[1]

Experimental Effects

Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible module can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.

Marco can apply Experimental Effects to Power Plants and Power Distributors even when the module has been engineered beyond the maximum grade Marco himself can provide.

For example, a Grade 5 Power Plant engineered by Hera Tani or Etienne Dorn can still be taken to Marco for a compatible Power Plant Experimental Effect.

Power Plant

Available Power Plant Experimental Effects include:[9]

Power Distributor

Available Power Distributor Experimental Effects include:[10]

See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.

Field note

Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The module must be taken to an Engineer who works on that module.

Marco's most useful capability while progressing through the Engineer network is his Grade 4 Power Plant Engineering.

Grade 4 is enough to make substantial changes to a ship's available power, heat efficiency, and Power Plant integrity before a Grade 5 Power Plant Engineer has been unlocked.

Tip

Common Power Plant choices

  • Armoured is a strong general-purpose option when a build has enough power capacity, improving integrity while also providing modest improvements to power generation and heat efficiency.
  • Overcharged provides substantially more power output, but sacrifices integrity and worsens thermal performance.
  • Low Emissions improves heat efficiency, but reduces available power and increases module mass.

There is no universal best Power Plant blueprint. The correct choice depends on the ship's power requirements and thermal characteristics.

Marco's Grade 3 Power Distributor Engineering is useful while progressing through the network, but commanders seeking maximum conventional Power Distributor performance can eventually obtain Grade 5 access from The Dweller or Etienne Dorn.

Blueprint Pinning

After earning sufficient reputation with Marco, one of his blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.

Tip

EDFM recommendation: Low Emissions Power Plant is a useful blueprint to consider pinning at Marco.

New Pilots Initiative's current suggested pinning plan also assigns Low Emissions Power Plant to Marco, leaving other Power Plant and Power Distributor blueprints available to be pinned at Engineers with different specialties.[11]

Remember that Marco only provides Power Plant Engineering through Grade 4. A blueprint pinned through Marco therefore cannot provide Grade 5 Power Plant Engineering remotely.

If you routinely use Grade 5 Low Emissions Power Plants, another Engineer may be a better location for that pin.

Important

A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Experimental Effects still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.

What Marco Cannot Fully Engineer

Neither of Marco's specialties reaches Grade 5.

His maximum grades are:

  • Power Plant: Grade 4
  • Power Distributor: Grade 3[1]

For higher-grade alternatives:

This means Marco is useful both as a power-systems Engineer and as an important step in Engineer progression, but commanders building fully Grade 5 power systems will eventually need other Engineers.

What Next?

Progressing Marco's reputation opens three important branches.
