EDFM // Engineering / Engineers
A combat-endurance, ammunition, and weapon-reload specialist based at The Last Call in Capoya, reached through Domino Green and leading to Yarden Bond.
Kit Fowler is an Odyssey Engineer based at The Last Call in the Capoya system. He is discovered through Domino Green and specialises in combat endurance, ammunition capacity, and handheld-weapon reload behaviour.[1]
Kit provides Added Melee Damage, Extra Ammo Capacity, Faster Shield Regen, Magazine Size, and Stowed Reloading.[1]
He forms the middle of the Odyssey Engineer branch:
Domino Green
└── Kit Fowler
└── Yarden Bond
Field note
Odyssey Engineering does not use the Grade 1–5 Engineer-reputation progression used by ship Engineers. Suits and weapons have equipment grades and modification slots; Kit installs individual modifications into those slots.
Location
- System: Capoya
- Settlement: The Last Call
- Body: Capoya 2
- Distance from arrival: approximately 434 Ls
- Engineer type: Odyssey Engineer
- Prerequisite Engineer: Domino Green
- System permit required: No
The Last Call is a surface Engineer base on Capoya 2.[2]
How to Discover Kit Fowler
Kit Fowler is discovered through Domino Green.[1]
After unlocking Domino, provide her with 5 doses of Push to receive the referral to Kit.[3]
Important
Push does not unlock Kit Fowler.
Push is given to Domino Green to obtain the referral. Kit has a separate unlock requirement after he becomes known.
There is also no Engineer-reputation grade to build with Domino before receiving the referral. Odyssey Engineers do not use the ship Engineer reputation system.
See Domino Green and Push for the complete preceding step.
How to Receive an Invitation
There is no separate invitation requirement after Domino Green has referred Kit.
Once Kit has been discovered, complete his bartender-sales requirement to unlock his workshop.[1]
How to Unlock Kit Fowler
Sell 5 Opinion Polls to bartenders.[1]
To unlock Kit:
- Unlock Domino Green by travelling at least 100 light-years in shuttles.
- Provide Domino with 5 Push to discover Kit Fowler.
- Obtain 5 Opinion Polls.
- Sell the Opinion Polls to bartenders.
- Travel to The Last Call on Capoya 2.
- Access Kit Fowler's Engineer workshop.
Important
The current requirement is 5 Opinion Polls. Frontier reduced Kit's requirement from 10 to 5 in Update 18.08.[4]
Older Odyssey Engineering guides may therefore show an outdated requirement.
Tip
Wait until Kit has been discovered through Domino before selling the Opinion Polls so there is no ambiguity about whether the Engineer progression is active.
Field note
Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after Kit is unlocked. If the expected services at The Last Call do not appear after completing the requirement, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]
Obtaining Opinion Polls
Opinion Polls are Odyssey Data.[5]
Current material data lists them as obtainable from:
- data ports in HAB buildings;
- data ports in CMD buildings; and
- mission rewards.[5]
Because Opinion Polls are Data, they do not occupy the physical Goods section of the suit backpack.
They currently have no normal suit or weapon modification recipe and are principally useful for Kit Fowler's Engineer progression.[5]
Odyssey Engineering at Kit Fowler
Odyssey Engineering works differently from ship Engineering.
Suits and handheld weapons have an equipment grade. Higher equipment grades provide additional modification slots:
| Equipment grade | Modification slots |
|---|---|
| Grade 1 | 0 |
| Grade 2 | 1 |
| Grade 3 | 2 |
| Grade 4 | 3 |
| Grade 5 | 4 |
Kit installs individual modifications into those available slots.
His modifications do not progress through Grade 1–5 Engineer reputation.
Important
A Grade 5 Dominator Suit does not receive a "Grade 5 Extra Ammo Capacity" modification. Grade 5 describes the suit itself and provides four modification slots; Extra Ammo Capacity occupies one of those slots as a single permanent modification.
See Odyssey Engineering for equipment grades, modification slots, upgrading, and Engineering-material mechanics.
Available Engineering
Kit currently provides five Odyssey modifications.[1]
| Modification | Equipment | Primary effect |
|---|---|---|
| Added Melee Damage | Suit | Increases damage from fists and weapon melee strikes |
| Extra Ammo Capacity | Suit | Increases carried ammunition capacity by 50% |
| Faster Shield Regen | Suit | Increases personal-shield regeneration rate by approximately 25% |
| Magazine Size | Handheld weapon | Increases the weapon's magazine capacity |
| Stowed Reloading | Handheld weapon | Automatically reloads a weapon after it has been stowed |
Added Melee Damage
Added Melee Damage substantially increases damage dealt by both unarmed attacks and melee strikes performed with a handheld weapon.[1]
The current modifiers are:
- +150% weapon melee damage multiplier
- +150% fists melee damage multiplier[1]
The current recipe is:
- 5 Combat Training Material
- 5 Combatant Performance
- 5 Epinephrine
- 8 Micro Thrusters
- 500,000 CR[1]
Other Engineers currently providing Added Melee Damage include:
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Added Melee Damage is a specialised modification.
It can support a deliberately melee-focused build, but most general-purpose combat suits gain more consistent benefit from survivability, ammunition, mobility, or utility modifications.
Odyssey modification slots are permanent and limited, so consider whether melee attacks are genuinely part of the suit's intended role before installing it.
Extra Ammo Capacity
Extra Ammo Capacity increases the amount of ammunition the suit can carry for each equipped weapon.[1]
The current modifier is:
- +50% ammunition capacity[1]
The current recipe is:
- 8 Recycling Logs
- 5 Weapon Test Data
- 5 Production Reports
- 3 Weapon Component
- 750,000 CR[1]
Other Engineers currently providing Extra Ammo Capacity include:
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Extra Ammo Capacity is one of Kit's strongest general-purpose modifications for a combat-focused Dominator Suit.
The 50% larger ammunition reserve reduces dependence on ammunition crates and allows more sustained fighting between resupply stops.
It is especially useful when carrying weapons with comparatively small total ammunition reserves.
Field note
Extra Ammo Capacity affects the suit's total carried ammunition reserve. It is separate from Magazine Size, which changes the amount of ammunition loaded into an individual weapon before a reload is required.
Faster Shield Regen
Faster Shield Regen increases the regeneration rate of the suit's personal shield.[1]
Independent in-game testing measures the modification at approximately +25% shield regeneration rate.[6]
Testing across several Dominator Suit grades produced approximately:
- Grade 3: 1.65 → 2.06
- Grade 4: 2.02 → 2.53
- Grade 5: 2.48 → 3.10[6]
These measurements correspond to an increase of roughly 25%.
The current recipe is:
- 5 Reactor Output Review
- 3 Ion Battery
- 8 Micro Transformer
- 8 Electrical Wiring
- 750,000 CR[1]
Other Engineers currently providing Faster Shield Regen include:
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Faster Shield Regen is a strong choice for a Dominator Suit intended for sustained surface combat.
Faster recovery shortens the downtime between engagements after the Commander stops taking shield damage.
It can be particularly useful in:
- Surface Conflict Zones;
- settlement combat missions;
- prolonged scavenger engagements; and
- other situations involving repeated fights with short recovery periods.
Field note
Current Inara data describes Faster Shield Regen as increasing personal-shield regeneration but displays the numerical modifier as Shield health +25%.[1] Independent in-game testing instead measures approximately 25% faster shield regeneration without supporting a corresponding 25% increase in maximum shield capacity.[6] EDFM therefore treats the current "Shield health" label as a database-display discrepancy.
Magazine Size
Magazine Size increases the amount of ammunition loaded into a handheld weapon before it must be reloaded.[1]
The resulting magazine capacity depends on the weapon being modified.
The current recipe is:
- 5 Weapon Test Data
- 3 Security Expenses
- 3 Weapon Component
- 3 Tungsten Carbide
- 5 Metal Coil
- 750,000 CR[1]
Other Engineers currently providing Magazine Size include:
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Magazine Size is most useful on weapons whose normal magazine forces frequent reloads during an engagement.
The practical value is weapon-dependent: increasing a restrictive magazine can substantially improve combat flow, while a weapon that already carries enough rounds per magazine may benefit more from another modification.
Magazine Size vs Extra Ammo Capacity
The two ammunition modifications affect different limits:
- Magazine Size — increases how much ammunition is loaded before each reload.
- Extra Ammo Capacity — increases how much total ammunition the suit carries.
A combat build can therefore use both.
Field note
Magazine Size is available on sidearms as well as primary weapons where compatible. For example, the Manticore Tormentor supports the modification.[7]
Stowed Reloading
Stowed Reloading automatically reloads a handheld weapon while it is stowed.[1]
The current recipe is:
- 5 Digital Designs
- 5 Operational Manual
- 5 Production Schedule
- 3 Circuit Board
- 8 Encrypted Memory Chip
- 1,000,000 CR[1]
Other Engineers currently providing Stowed Reloading include:
In-game testing has measured the automatic stowed reload at approximately 5 seconds, independent of the weapon's normal reload time.[8]
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Stowed Reloading is particularly strong on loadouts that frequently alternate between weapons.
Instead of manually reloading an empty weapon, the Commander can switch to another weapon and continue fighting while the first reloads in the background.
This is especially useful when:
- using separate thermal and kinetic weapons;
- frequently switching between a primary weapon and sidearm;
- using weapons with long normal reload animations; or
- alternating between two weapons during sustained combat.
Example
A typical combat sequence can be:
- Fire Weapon A until its magazine is empty.
- Switch to Weapon B.
- Continue fighting with Weapon B.
- Leave Weapon A stowed for roughly five seconds.
- Switch back to Weapon A after its automatic reload has completed.
Field note
Stowed Reloading does not make the reload instantaneous. The weapon must remain stowed long enough for the automatic reload to finish.[8]
Stowed Reloading vs Reload Speed
Reload Speed and Stowed Reloading solve the same basic problem in different ways:
- Reload Speed — shortens a manual reload while continuing to use that weapon.
- Stowed Reloading — allows the weapon to reload in the background while another weapon is being used.
Tip
Use Reload Speed when a weapon is normally kept active throughout an engagement.
Use Stowed Reloading when the loadout naturally switches between weapons often enough to give the stowed weapon time to reload.
Kit does not provide Reload Speed himself; that modification is available from Jude Navarro, Uma Laszlo, and Eleanor Bresa.
Engineer Unlock Chain
Kit Fowler belongs to the Domino Green branch of the Odyssey Engineer network.
The complete branch is:
Domino Green
└── Kit Fowler
└── Yarden Bond
The progression is:
- Unlock Domino Green.
- Provide Domino with 5 Push to discover Kit Fowler.
- Complete Kit Fowler's unlock requirement.
- Provide Kit with 5 Surveillance Equipment to discover Yarden Bond.[3][1]
Referring Yarden Bond
After Kit Fowler has been unlocked, provide him with 5 Surveillance Equipment to receive the referral to Yarden Bond.[1]
Obtaining Surveillance Equipment
Surveillance Equipment is physical Odyssey Goods.[9]
Current material data lists it as obtainable from:
- STO buildings
- EXT buildings
- CMD buildings
- mission rewards[9]
Because Surveillance Equipment is physical Goods, the five units must be carried to Kit and provided directly.
Surveillance Equipment is also used in Night Vision modification recipes, so it has value beyond the Engineer referral.[9]
Tip
If you intend to unlock both Yarden Bond and Night Vision on several suits, collect more than the five units required for the referral. The referral consumes material that is also useful for actual Engineering.
Once the five units have been provided, Yarden Bond becomes known.
Continuing to Yarden Bond
Receiving Kit's referral reveals Yarden Bond but does not unlock her workshop.
Yarden has her own separate bartender-sales requirement after she becomes known.[10]
See Yarden Bond for the complete next step.
Increasing Engineer Reputation
Not applicable to Odyssey Engineers in the same way as ship Engineers.
Kit Fowler does not use the Grade 1–5 Engineer-reputation progression found at ship Engineer workshops.
Once Kit has been unlocked, his modifications can be installed provided that:
- the equipment is compatible;
- the suit or weapon has an unused modification slot; and
- you possess the required Odyssey materials and credits.
The equipment itself is upgraded separately through Pioneer Supplies.
Likewise, Kit's referral to Yarden Bond is not triggered by increasing Engineer reputation. It is triggered specifically by providing 5 Surveillance Equipment.[1]
See Odyssey Engineering for the complete on-foot Engineering system.
Experimental Effects
Not applicable.
Odyssey suit and handheld-weapon Engineering does not use the separate ship-module Experimental Effects system.
Kit's five modifications are themselves the permanent modifications installed onto the equipment.
Blueprint Pinning
Not applicable.
Odyssey modifications cannot be pinned for Remote Engineering in the same manner as ship Engineering blueprints.
A suit or weapon must be taken directly to Kit Fowler or another Odyssey Engineer offering the desired modification.
Field note
Unlocking Kit therefore does not make Extra Ammo Capacity, Faster Shield Regen, Magazine Size, or Stowed Reloading remotely available from another station.
Recommended Engineering
Kit's modification set is especially strong for sustained ground combat.
Dominator Suit
For a Dominator Suit intended for Surface Conflict Zones or other prolonged combat:
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Extra Ammo Capacity and Faster Shield Regen are Kit's strongest broadly useful suit modifications.
Extra Ammo Capacity extends the amount of fighting that can be done before resupplying, while Faster Shield Regen shortens recovery between engagements.
Together they improve two different parts of combat endurance:
- Extra Ammo Capacity — increases offensive endurance.
- Faster Shield Regen — improves defensive recovery.
Added Melee Damage is much more specialised and should normally be reserved for a suit deliberately built around melee combat.
Maverick Suit
Faster Shield Regen can be useful on a Maverick used regularly for illegal or hostile settlement operations.
Extra Ammo Capacity can also help if the suit routinely sees heavy combat, but utility modifications such as:
often compete more strongly for Maverick modification slots.
Artemis Suit
Kit's suit modifications generally provide little value to a dedicated exploration-focused Artemis Suit.
A Commander normally has stronger Artemis options focused on:
- mobility;
- battery endurance;
- night operations; and
- exploration convenience.
Weapons
Kit provides:
Both can substantially improve weapon handling, but they solve different limitations.
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Stowed Reloading is particularly valuable on weapons that are frequently switched out during combat.
Magazine Size is the better candidate when a weapon's restrictive magazine is the main reason it becomes unavailable during an engagement.
A weapon can also use both if its intended role justifies spending two of its limited modification slots on ammunition handling.
Low-capacity weapons
Weapons with restrictive magazines or long reload interruptions can benefit particularly strongly from Kit's weapon modifications.
For example:
- a larger magazine reduces the frequency of reloads;
- Stowed Reloading allows those reloads to occur while another weapon is active.
The exact best combination remains weapon-specific.
What Kit Cannot Modify
Kit currently provides five modification types:
- Added Melee Damage — suit
- Extra Ammo Capacity — suit
- Faster Shield Regen — suit
- Magazine Size — weapon
- Stowed Reloading — weapon[1]
Other commonly useful modifications require different Engineers.
