The description box below is already pre-filled with an empty {{tl|EDFM image information}} skeleton — fill in the fields that apply and delete the rest. This records the picture's own provenance (what it shows, who captured/made it, how it's been modified, what it's for, who owns the underlying material) as a separate <code>== Summary ==</code> section — kept apart from the <code>== Licensing ==</code> section the dropdown above generates, and apart from the subject's own article, which is where gameplay facts belong. For example, a Professor Palin headshot captured in-game:
The form below asks only for what EDFM can't safely work out on its own:

<pre>
# '''Destination filename''' — a clear, descriptive name (it becomes the page title in the File namespace).
{{EDFM image information
# '''Media purpose''' — what kind of image this is (Engineer portrait, ship image, UI screenshot, etc.). This drives the description and categories EDFM generates.
|description = In-game portrait of Professor Palin, a Ship Engineer in Elite Dangerous.
# '''Subject''' — the EDFM article this image is of, e.g. <code>Hero Ferrari</code> or <code>Anaconda</code> — just the page title, no <code><nowiki>[[brackets]]</nowiki></code>. Required for media purposes that have an obvious subject (a portrait, a ship, a location); optional for general gameplay screenshots, UI screenshots, and diagrams.
|subject = [[Professor Palin]]
# '''Licensing''' — see above.
|subject_type = Ship Engineer
# '''Image modifications''' and '''Additional notes''' — both optional. Only fill these in if there's actually something worth recording (e.g. "Cropped to portrait framing") — leave them blank otherwise.
|captured_by = Your commander name
|modifications = Cropped to portrait framing
|intended_use = Identification and illustration on the Professor Palin article.
|copyright_holder = Frontier Developments plc
}}
</pre>

Only state <code>capture_date</code> or <code>modifications</code> if actually known — leave them out rather than guess. See [[Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Adding an Image]] for the full walkthrough.
EDFM then generates the file page automatically: it records who you are, the source and media type implied by your Licensing choice, the copyright holder where that's established by the license, a short factual description built from the media purpose and subject, a capture date '''only''' if the file's own metadata genuinely contains one, the relevant categories, and the <code>{{tl|EDFM image information}}</code>/<code>== Licensing ==</code> markup itself. You should not need to write or edit any template syntax for a normal upload.

If EDFM can't confidently determine something (for example, a subject's Engineer type), it leaves that field out rather than guess — you can always add it afterwards by editing the file page normally, the same as any other page on this wiki.

Before you upload, read Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Image Use Policy — in short: only upload images you personally captured or created, never something copied from Fandom, Reddit, Discord, YouTube, another wiki, or a search-engine image result.

Which Licensing option do I pick?

Almost every upload to this wiki will be an ordinary gameplay screenshot — pick "Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot" unless you have a specific reason not to:

  • Elite Dangerous in-game screenshot — the normal choice. A screenshot you captured yourself: an Engineer headshot, a ship, a station or facility, a UI element, a location, anything captured from within the game.
  • Official Frontier / Elite Dangerous media — only for media Frontier Developments itself released (press kit assets, official screenshots, promotional art) — not something you captured in-game.
  • Original work — creator retains copyright — a diagram or graphic you made, not a screenshot of the game (e.g. a hand-drawn route map).
  • CC BY 4.0 / CC BY-SA 4.0 — original work you made and are deliberately releasing under a Creative Commons license.
  • Used with explicit permission — someone else's image, used with their explicit, documented permission. Rare — most uploads shouldn't need this.
  • Public domain — genuinely public domain (expired copyright, government work, etc.), with the reason stated in the description. Not a fallback for "I don't know the license," and not correct for game assets, which aren't public domain.

There is deliberately no generic "unknown" or "fair use" option — every upload needs one of the classifications above.

Filling in the rest of the form

The form below asks only for what EDFM can't safely work out on its own:

  1. Destination filename — a clear, descriptive name (it becomes the page title in the File namespace).
  2. Media purpose — what kind of image this is (Engineer portrait, ship image, UI screenshot, etc.). This drives the description and categories EDFM generates.
  3. Subject — the EDFM article this image is of, e.g. Hero Ferrari or Anaconda — just the page title, no [[brackets]]. Required for media purposes that have an obvious subject (a portrait, a ship, a location); optional for general gameplay screenshots, UI screenshots, and diagrams.
  4. Licensing — see above.
  5. Image modifications and Additional notes — both optional. Only fill these in if there's actually something worth recording (e.g. "Cropped to portrait framing") — leave them blank otherwise.

EDFM then generates the file page automatically: it records who you are, the source and media type implied by your Licensing choice, the copyright holder where that's established by the license, a short factual description built from the media purpose and subject, a capture date only if the file's own metadata genuinely contains one, the relevant categories, and the {{EDFM image information}}/== Licensing == markup itself. You should not need to write or edit any template syntax for a normal upload.

If EDFM can't confidently determine something (for example, a subject's Engineer type), it leaves that field out rather than guess — you can always add it afterwards by editing the file page normally, the same as any other page on this wiki.
