What exists
The Elite Dangerous Field Manual is live and under active development.
* Production MediaWiki CURRENTVERSION-class install (see Special:Version for the exact running version), served over HTTPS at the origin.
* Read access for anonymous visitors; editing/upload restricted to administrators while the project is in initial setup.
* Initial namespace structure, categories, and editorial templates (this page's sibling pages and templates).
* Daily automated backups, a scheduled job-queue runner, and basic health monitoring.

What's deliberately NOT done yet
EDFM is intended to become a practical, current manual for Elite Dangerous — combining factual reference material with procedures, explanations, recommendations, and guidance that help Commanders understand not only what something is, but how to work with it in practice.
* Not launched publicly — the site is marked noindex for search engines (see `/opt/edwiki/docs/launch-checklist.md`).
* Cloudflare is not configured — deliberately deferred by operator decision (2026-08-07): the zone is live on Cloudflare (nameservers switched), but wiring up DNS/SSL/Access was set aside after repeated API-token issues, since the site doesn't need that protection at the moment. See `/opt/edwiki/docs/cloudflare-manual-setup.md` for the current state and how to pick it back up later.
* No trusted public HTTPS certificate yet — the origin currently uses a temporary self-signed certificate pending the DNS/Cloudflare step above.
* No email/SMTP configured — password-reset email etc. is disabled until a real mail service is set up.
* Public registration and anonymous editing are closed.
* No real gameplay content yet — the content pages created during initial setup are deliberately structural/placeholder rather than populated with gameplay facts, per Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Editorial Policy.
* Content license undecided see the Legal and Trademark Notice.

Next steps
The site is open for public use and contribution. Coverage is not yet uniform across every subject, so individual pages use review and source-status information where appropriate to indicate how thoroughly their content has been checked.

Current stage
EDFM has moved beyond its initial technical setup and into active content development.

The current focus is on:

* building complete coverage of the game's major systems;
* replacing structural or placeholder pages with researched material;
* reviewing existing articles against current game behavior;
* distinguishing Live, Legacy, Odyssey, and post-Legacy mechanics where necessary;
* improving navigation between reference material and practical procedures; and
* building a contributor workflow that allows the manual to grow without sacrificing accuracy.

The technical infrastructure required to operate the site is maintained separately from this page. This page tracks the state of the Field Manual's content, not its server configuration.

EDFM // Operations

Where the Field Manual stands today, which areas are being developed, and where contributors can help.

The Elite Dangerous Field Manual is live and under active development.

EDFM is intended to become a practical, current manual for Elite Dangerous — combining factual reference material with procedures, explanations, recommendations, and guidance that help Commanders understand not only what something is, but how to work with it in practice.

The site is open for public use and contribution. Coverage is not yet uniform across every subject, so individual pages use review and source-status information where appropriate to indicate how thoroughly their content has been checked.

Current stage

EDFM has moved beyond its initial technical setup and into active content development.

The current focus is on:

 • building complete coverage of the game's major systems;
 • replacing structural or placeholder pages with researched material;
 • reviewing existing articles against current game behavior;
 • distinguishing Live, Legacy, Odyssey, and post-Legacy mechanics where necessary;
 • improving navigation between reference material and practical procedures; and
 • building a contributor workflow that allows the manual to grow without sacrificing accuracy.

The technical infrastructure required to operate the site is maintained separately from this page. This page tracks the state of the Field Manual's content, not its server configuration.

Content progress

Engineering

Status: Substantial coverage; active review

Engineering is currently one of EDFM's most developed subject areas.

Coverage includes:

 • all ship and Odyssey Engineers;
 • Engineer locations and unlock requirements;
 • Engineer referral chains;
 • ship Engineering grades and blueprint availability;
 • Odyssey suit and weapon modifications;
 • Experimental Effects;
 • Engineering materials; and
 • practical Engineer-unlock guidance.

The Engineer directory and individual Engineer articles are undergoing a systematic review to standardize their structure, verify current requirements, identify Live/Legacy differences, and incorporate newer Engineering introduced after the Live and Legacy versions diverged.

See:

New and returning Commanders

Status: In development

EDFM is developing separate entry paths for players who are learning the game for the first time and players returning after an extended absence.

The New Commander Roadmap is intended to guide a new Commander through the early game without requiring them to read the Field Manual from beginning to end.

The Returning Commander Overview is intended to identify major systems and mechanics that may have changed while a player was away.

See:

Field Procedures

Status: Expanding

Field Procedures are practical, task-oriented guides.

Rather than simply describing a mechanic, a Field Procedure should answer questions such as:

 • What do I need before I start?
 • Where do I need to go?
 • What do I actually do?
 • What can go wrong?
 • How do I know when I am finished?
 • What should I do next?

This is a major long-term part of EDFM's purpose and will continue to expand as subject areas are developed.

Game Reference

Status: Expanding

Game Reference contains factual information intended for quick lookup, including requirements, values, specifications, capabilities, locations, and comparisons.

Reference material and Field Procedures are designed to complement one another:

Field note

Game Reference explains what something is and how it works. Field Procedures explain what to do with it.

Ships and Equipment

Status: Needs expansion

Ships and Equipment is intended to provide practical and technical information about ships, modules, outfitting, equipment roles, and build considerations.

Coverage is not yet comprehensive.

Odyssey

Status: In development

Odyssey coverage includes substantial Engineer information, but the broader on-foot portion of the Field Manual still requires expansion.

Planned and developing coverage includes:

 • suits;
 • handheld weapons;
 • settlements;
 • missions;
 • materials;
 • suit and weapon Engineering;
 • stealth and infiltration;
 • Surface Conflict Zones; and
 • other on-foot activities.

Powerplay

Status: Needs expansion and continuing review

Powerplay requires current, mechanics-focused documentation.

Because Powerplay has undergone major revisions, EDFM should avoid carrying forward outdated mechanics without verifying that they still apply to the current game.

Coverage should ultimately include both reference material and practical procedures for participating effectively.

Colonisation

Status: In development

Colonisation is intended to document the process of expanding into new systems, planning construction, supplying projects, understanding facility requirements, and developing systems over time.

Because colonisation mechanics continue to be an area where practical experience matters as much as raw reference data, this section is particularly suited to EDFM's combination of factual reference and operational guidance.

Operations

Status: Needs expansion

Operations covers newer Live-only gameplay and equipment introduced after the separation of Live and Legacy.

This area also affects older subjects such as Engineering, because some newer modules and blueprints have restrictions or capabilities that do not exist in Legacy.

Lore and History

Status: Needs expansion

Lore and historical material is part of the Field Manual where it provides useful context for the current game world.

EDFM is not intended to reproduce an exhaustive fictional encyclopedia. Lore coverage should prioritize information that helps explain locations, factions, events, mechanics, or activities a Commander may encounter.

What a review status means

EDFM distinguishes between having information on a page and having that information sufficiently checked for publication.

A reviewed article should, where applicable:

 • use current sources;
 • distinguish confirmed facts from recommendations;
 • identify meaningful Live and Legacy differences;
 • avoid presenting obsolete requirements as current;
 • resolve conflicting information where reasonably possible;
 • explain important game quirks rather than merely repeating misleading interface text; and
 • cite the sources supporting factual claims.

A page can therefore exist and still require additional review.

See Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Editorial Policy for EDFM's sourcing and editorial standards.

Current priorities

Development priorities change as sections are researched and contributors become available.

The current working list is maintained at:

Pages Needing Review

That page should be used for individual articles requiring research, verification, expansion, correction, or direct in-game testing rather than duplicating a detailed task list here.

Contributing

EDFM is intended to grow through contributions from Commanders with different areas of experience.

Useful contributions include:

 • correcting inaccurate or outdated information;
 • adding missing procedures;
 • expanding incomplete reference pages;
 • providing current in-game verification;
 • identifying version-specific behavior;
 • improving explanations that are technically correct but difficult to follow;
 • documenting unusual mechanics or known game quirks; and
 • identifying pages that require a new research pass.

You do not need to know everything about Elite Dangerous to contribute. A well-documented correction or firsthand verification of one mechanic can be useful.

Before making substantial additions, see:

About technical status

Server configuration, backups, proxy configuration, certificates, job queues, deployment notes, and other infrastructure details are maintained as administrative documentation rather than as part of the public content-progress page.

Technical infrastructure should only be mentioned publicly when it directly affects readers or contributors.
