EDFM // Engineering / Engineers
A Grade 5 Power Plant and Detailed Surface Scanner specialist based at The Jet's Hole in Kuwemaki, reached through Liz Ryder.
Hera Tani is a ship Engineer based at The Jet's Hole in the Kuwemaki system. She is reached through Liz Ryder and specialises primarily in ship power systems.[1]
Hera provides Grade 5 Power Plant and Grade 5 Detailed Surface Scanner Engineering, along with Power Distributor and Sensor Engineering through Grade 3.[1][2]
Field note
Hera's primary maximum-grade specialty is the Power Plant. Although she also works on Power Distributors and Sensors, those modules stop at Grade 3 at her workshop.
Location
- System: Kuwemaki
- Facility: The Jet's Hole
- Body: Kuwemaki A 3 a
- Engineer type: Ship Engineer
- Referral required: Liz Ryder
- System permit required: No
The Jet's Hole is a surface Engineer base on Kuwemaki A 3 a.[3]
How to Discover Hera Tani
Hera Tani is discovered through Liz Ryder.
Reach Grade 3 access and progress at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Liz to receive her referral to Hera.[2]
Liz can also refer Comanders directly to Etienne Dorn in Colonia. Hera and Etienne are therefore parallel referrals from Liz rather than one being required for the other.
Field note
Receiving Liz's referral makes Hera known to you. Her separate Imperial Navy rank requirement must still be satisfied before her workshop can be unlocked.
How to Receive an Invitation
Reach the Imperial Navy rank of Outsider or higher.[1][2]
Outsider is the first earned rank in the Imperial Navy progression.
If your Imperial Navy rank is already Outsider or higher, Hera's meeting requirement has been satisfied.
See Imperial Navy Rank for how Imperial Navy progression works, how to earn rank progress, and how to check your current rank.
Important
Hera requires an Imperial Navy rank, not merely reputation with an Empire-aligned minor faction. Faction reputation is used while working toward Imperial Navy progression, but the Engineer requirement itself is the rank of Outsider or higher.
How to Unlock Hera Tani
Unlock requirements summary:
- Reach Grade 3 access and at least one-third progress toward Grade 4 with Liz Ryder.
- Reach Outsider or higher in Imperial Navy Rank.
- Obtain a total of 50 units of Kamitra Cigars.
- Donate the 50 Kamitra Cigars to Hera Tani.
Important
Kamitra Cigars are a rare commodity. They are not Raw, Manufactured, or Encoded Engineering materials. Each unit occupies one tonne of cargo space.
For the complete step-by-step process, see Unlocking Hera Tani.
Obtaining Kamitra Cigars
The normal production source for Kamitra Cigars is:
- System: Kamitra
- Station: Hammel Terminal
- Commodity type: Rare commodity[4]
Hera requires 50 units in total.
Because Kamitra Cigars are a rare commodity, the quantity available directly from Hammel Terminal can be limited. If fewer than 50 are available, multiple purchases may be required.
Tip
Check your available allocation at Hammel Terminal before planning around a single 50-tonne trip. Rare-commodity availability is not the same as the large supply figures normally seen for ordinary market commodities.
Player-owned Fleet Carriers may also offer Kamitra Cigars if another Commander has stocked them for resale. Carrier inventory and prices are player-controlled and can change.
See Kamitra Cigars for current acquisition details and rare-commodity mechanics.
Field note
Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after Hera is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]
Increasing Engineer Reputation
Reputation with Hera Tani can be increased by:
- crafting Engineering modifications at The Jet's Hole; or
- selling commodities at The Jet's Hole.[1]
Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Hera supports for each blueprint.
Reaching Grade 3 access and progressing at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 allows Hera to provide referrals to Broo Tarquin and Tiana Fortune.[2][5][6]
See Engineer Reputation for how ship Engineer reputation, grade access, blueprint progression, referrals, and alternative reputation methods work.
Tip
If you have ordinary commodities to sell after unlocking Hera, selling them through the commodity market at The Jet's Hole can help increase your Engineer reputation without relying entirely on Engineering rolls.
Engineer Unlock Chain
Hera Tani belongs to the Liz Ryder branch of the ship Engineer network.
The route to Hera is:
Liz Ryder └── Hera Tani
After reaching Grade 3 access and progressing at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Hera, she provides referrals to:
Liz also directly refers Commanders to Etienne Dorn in Colonia.
The branch is therefore:
Liz Ryder ├── Hera Tani │ ├── Broo Tarquin │ └── Tiana Fortune └── Etienne Dorn [Colonia]
Current Engineer data independently lists both Broo Tarquin and Tiana Fortune as being discovered through Hera Tani.[5][6]
Field note
Broo Tarquin and Tiana Fortune are parallel referrals from Hera. Unlocking either one is not required before unlocking the other.
See Engineer Unlock Guide for the complete referral network.
Available Engineering
Hera's current Engineering coverage is shown below. The listed grade is the highest grade she can apply to that module.[1]
| Module | Available blueprints | Maximum grade |

|
Grade 5 |

Grade 3 |
| Sensors |
|
Grade 3 |
Hera's maximum-grade specialties are therefore the Power Plant and Detailed Surface Scanner.
Operations-era Engineering
The Operations-era Engineering system added three current blueprints to Hera's workshop:
- Long Range Detailed for the Detailed Surface Scanner;
- Balanced for the Power Distributor; and
- Support Focused for the Power Distributor.[7]
These blueprints are available only in Live and can only be applied to compatible Merc modules.
They also use Merc Coin as part of their Engineering costs.
Long Range Detailed Surface Scanner
Long Range Detailed increases Detailed Surface Scanner probe radius at the cost of additional module mass and power draw.[8]
Hera can apply Long Range Detailed through Grade 5.
At Grade 5, the blueprint provides:
- +100% Probe Radius[8]
Important
Long Range Detailed can only be applied to compatible Merc Detailed Surface Scanners.
Balanced Power Distributor
Balanced increases capacity and recharge rate across the SYS, ENG, and WEP capacitors while reducing Power Distributor power draw. The tradeoffs include increased module mass and reduced integrity.[9]
Hera can apply Balanced through Grade 3.
At Grade 3, the current blueprint provides:
- +10.5% SYS, ENG, and WEP capacity
- +11.5% SYS, ENG, and WEP recharge
- -5% power draw
- +5% mass
- -2.5% integrity[9]
For Grade 4 and Grade 5 Balanced Engineering, use The Dweller or Etienne Dorn.[9]
Important
Balanced can only be applied to compatible Merc Power Distributors.
Support Focused Power Distributor
Support Focused increases SYS and ENG capacity and recharge while reducing WEP capacity and recharge.[10]
Hera can apply Support Focused through Grade 3.
At Grade 3, the current blueprint provides:
- +22.5% ENG capacity
- +20% ENG recharge
- +22.5% SYS capacity
- +20% SYS recharge
- -12.5% WEP capacity
- -10% WEP recharge[10]
For Grade 4 and Grade 5 Support Focused Engineering, use The Dweller or Etienne Dorn.[10]
Important
Support Focused can only be applied to compatible Merc Power Distributors.
Experimental Effects
Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible module can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.
Hera can apply Experimental Effects to Power Plants and Power Distributors.
Detailed Surface Scanners and Sensors do not currently have Experimental Effects.
Power Plant
Available Power Plant Experimental Effects include:[11]
Power Distributor
Available Power Distributor Experimental Effects include:[9]
See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.
Field note
Hera can apply a compatible Experimental Effect to a Power Distributor even if that distributor has been engineered beyond her Grade 3 blueprint limit by another Engineer.
Important
Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The module must be taken to an Engineer who works on that module.
Recommended Engineering
Hera's most important conventional capability is her Grade 5 Power Plant Engineering.
Power Plant Engineering requires more care than simply maximizing one statistic because every blueprint changes the ship's available power, thermal behaviour, integrity, or mass.
Armoured Power Plant
Armoured increases Power Plant integrity while also providing modest improvements to power generation and heat efficiency. The primary tradeoff is increased module mass.[11]
At Grade 5, Armoured provides:
- +120% integrity
- +12% power generation
- -12% heat efficiency value
- +20% mass[11]
Tip
Common general-purpose choice: Armoured + Thermal Spread
If the ship has enough power with an Armoured Power Plant, combining Armoured with Thermal Spread is a strong general-purpose configuration.
It improves durability and thermal behaviour while also providing some additional power output.
This is a recommendation rather than a universal rule.
Overcharged Power Plant
Overcharged is intended for ships that need substantially more power generation.
At Grade 5, Overcharged provides +40% power generation, but reduces Power Plant integrity and worsens thermal efficiency.[12]
Important
Do not automatically engineer every Power Plant to Grade 5 Overcharged. Higher Overcharged grades increase heat and reduce integrity. Use only as much additional generation as the build actually requires when thermal efficiency or survivability matters.
Useful Overcharged Experimental Effects include:
- Thermal Spread when heat management is the priority; and
- Monstered when still more power output is required.
Low Emissions Power Plant
Low Emissions substantially improves thermal efficiency at the cost of reduced power generation and increased mass.
It is especially useful for builds where low heat is more valuable than maximum available power, including some stealth-oriented, exploration, and specialised thermal-management builds.
Power Distributor
Hera's conventional Power Distributor Engineering stops at Grade 3.
That is enough for intermediate Engineering or applying Experimental Effects, but Commanders seeking Grade 5 conventional Power Distributor Engineering should use The Dweller or Etienne Dorn.
For many general-purpose and combat ships, Charge Enhanced combined with Super Conduits remains a common configuration because it prioritises capacitor recharge.
Blueprint Pinning
After earning sufficient reputation with Hera, one of her blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.
Tip
EDFM recommendation: Overcharged Power Plant is a useful blueprint to consider pinning at Hera.
Hera provides Overcharged through Grade 5, and remote access is particularly convenient when a new ship or changed loadout requires more power than its current Power Plant can supply.
If your fleet more commonly uses Armoured rather than Overcharged, Armoured is an equally reasonable Grade 5 pin.
Because Hera's Power Distributor and Sensor Engineering stop at Grade 3, one of her Grade 5 Power Plant blueprints will usually provide more value as a long-term pin.
Blueprint pinning should reflect the ships and builds you actually use.
Important
A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Effects such as Thermal Spread, Monstered, and Super Conduits still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.
What Hera Cannot Fully Engineer
Hera provides maximum-grade Power Plant and Detailed Surface Scanner Engineering, but her Power Distributor and Sensor work stops at Grade 3.
Her maximum grades are:
- Power Plant: Grade 5
- Detailed Surface Scanner: Grade 5
- Power Distributor: Grade 3
- Sensors: Grade 3[1]
For higher-grade Power Distributor Engineering:
- The Dweller provides Grade 5 Power Distributor Engineering.
- Etienne Dorn provides Grade 5 Power Distributor Engineering in Colonia.[13]
For higher-grade Sensor Engineering, several Engineers provide Grade 5 access, including:
For Grade 5 Power Plant Engineering, Etienne Dorn is Hera's other maximum-grade alternative.
Hera remains the primary Bubble Engineer for conventional Grade 5 Power Plant Engineering.
What Next?
