EDFM // Ships & Equipment / Modules
The core internal module that gives a ship supercruise and hyperspace jump capability — one of the most commonly Engineered modules in the game.
The Frame Shift Drive (commonly abbreviated FSD) is a core internal module fitted to every ship. It provides two distinct functions: supercruise, the faster-than-light drive used for travel within a system, and hyperspace jumps, which move a ship between star systems along the galaxy map.
Overview
Every ship hull has a fixed core internal slot reserved for its Frame Shift Drive; a ship cannot fly without one fitted. The class and rating of the drive fitted, combined with the ship's unladen mass, cargo, and fuel load, determine its maximum jump range.
Frame Shift Drive Engineering is one of the most commonly sought modifications in the game, since jump range directly affects exploration reach, trade route efficiency, and how quickly a Commander can relocate between regions.
A separate module, the Frame Shift Drive Interdictor, is used to pull other ships out of supercruise — it is a different optional internal module, not a Frame Shift Drive upgrade.
