How to Unlock Broo Tarquin
Unlock requirements summary:
* Reach Grade 3 access and at least one-third progress toward Grade 4 with Hera Tani.
* Reach Competent or higher in Combat Rank.
* Obtain a total of 50 units of Fujin Tea.
* Donate the 50 Fujin Tea to Broo Tarquin.

For the complete step-by-step process, see Unlocking Broo Tarquin.

Obtaining Fujin Tea
The normal production source for Fujin Tea is:

* System: Fujin
* Station: Futen Spaceport
* Commodity type: Rare commodity

Broo requires 50 units in total.

Rare commodities have limited availability, so Futen Spaceport may not offer all 50 units at once. The available quantity can vary and should be checked when preparing the unlock.

Player-owned Fleet Carriers may also offer Fujin Tea when another Commander has stocked it for resale. Carrier stock and prices are player-controlled and can change.

Increasing Engineer Reputation
Reputation with Broo Tarquin can be increased by:

* crafting Engineering modifications at Broo's Legacy; or
* handing in bounty vouchers at Broo's Legacy.

Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Broo supports for each blueprint.

See Engineer Reputation for how ship Engineer reputation, grade access, blueprint progression, referrals, and alternative reputation methods work.

An earlier pass at researching this page turned up a mention of "Kamitra Cigars" as the unlock commodity; that figure belongs to Hera Tani's own unlock requirement, not Broo Tarquin's, and the two were confused in one AI-summarised search result during research. Fujin Tea is the commodity confirmed directly on Broo Tarquin's own Inara entry and corroborated by two independent Frontier Forums threads specifically about this requirement.

Increasing Engineer Reputation
Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible laser can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.
Community sources indicate reputation with Broo Tarquin increases through crafting modifications at his workshop and turning in bounty vouchers there. Reputation gain mechanics that are common to all Engineers (rather than specific to Broo Tarquin) are covered on the main Engineering page rather than repeated here.

Broo can apply Experimental Effects to all three laser types he engineers.

Recommended Engineering
Broo's Grade 5 access to all three standard laser families allows several very different build approaches.

Beam Lasers
Beam Lasers offer continuous thermal damage but place significant demands on the Power Distributor and generate substantial heat.

Two common blueprint approaches address those weaknesses differently.

Efficient
Efficient improves damage while substantially reducing:

* power draw;
* distributor draw; and
* thermal load.

At Grade 5, Efficient provides:

* +24% damage
* -48% power draw
* -45% distributor draw
* -60% thermal load

Long Range
Long Range increases both the weapon's maximum range and the distance at which damage falloff begins.

At Grade 5, Long Range provides:

* +100% maximum range
* +100% damage falloff start
* +15% power draw
* +30% mass

Thermal Vent increases heat dissipation while successfully striking the target, but increases heat generation while the weapon misses.

Burst Lasers
Burst Lasers sit between continuous Beam Laser fire and the slower firing pattern of Pulse Lasers.

Broo provides both Efficient and Rapid Fire through Grade 5, along with specialised options such as Focused and Long Range.

Burst Lasers also support Inertial Impact, which substantially increases damage and converts part of it to kinetic damage at the cost of significant jitter.

Pulse Lasers
Pulse Lasers have comparatively low distributor and thermal demands and can be engineered through Grade 5 for several roles.

Efficient further reduces their operating costs while increasing damage.

Pulse Lasers can also use specialised Experimental Effects including:

* Emissive Munitions;
* Phasing Sequence; and
* Scramble Spectrum.

The appropriate blueprint and Experimental Effect depend on whether the weapon is intended for sustained conventional damage or a specialised utility role.

Blueprint Pinning
Blueprint Pinning
Fact: Broo Tarquin can provide the laser blueprints listed under Available Engineering above, once his maximum grade for each is confirmed.

EDFM recommendation: Not yet made. A pinning recommendation needs the maximum-grade data above filled in first, plus a check of which of these blueprints are also available at Grade 5 from a more convenient Engineer — see Elite Dangerous Field Manual:Engineering Architecture for why EDFM treats pinning guidance as editorial judgement, not a database fact.
After earning sufficient reputation with Broo, one of his blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.

Unlocking Broo Tarquin Engineering Engineer Unlock Guide

Broo also provides Grade 5 Burst and Pulse Laser Engineering, so a frequently used blueprint for either weapon type remains a reasonable alternative.

Blueprint pinning should reflect the weapons and builds you actually use.

What Broo Cannot Fully Engineer
Within his specialty, Broo has no conventional grade limitation: all three laser types he supports reach Grade 5.

His maximum grades are:

* Beam Laser: Grade 5
* Burst Laser: Grade 5
* Pulse Laser: Grade 5

Broo does not engineer other thermal or energy weapons such as:

* Plasma Accelerators;
* Rail Guns; or
* Guardian energy weapons.

For other Grade 5 laser Engineers:

* Mel Brandon provides Grade 5 Beam, Burst, and Pulse Laser Engineering in Colonia.
* The Dweller provides lower-grade Beam and Burst Laser Engineering and Pulse Laser Engineering through Grade 4.

Broo remains the primary Bubble Engineer for maximum-grade conventional Beam, Burst, and Pulse Laser Engineering.

What Next?
Broo Tarquin is the end of his current Engineer referral branch and does not currently introduce another Engineer.

After unlocking him, the most relevant next Engineer depends on which other weapons or ship systems remain unfinished.

Broo Tarquin is a ship Engineer based at Broo's Legacy in the Muang system. He is reached through Hera Tani and specialises exclusively in laser weapons.[1]

Broo provides Grade 5 Engineering for Beam Lasers, Burst Lasers, and Pulse Lasers, making him the primary Bubble Engineer for maximum-grade conventional laser Engineering.[1][2]

In Live, Broo also provides the Operations-era Plasma Conversion blueprint through Grade 5 for all three laser types.[3]

Field note

Broo is a dedicated laser Engineer. Unlike Engineers with broad utility coverage, every conventional module he engineers is a laser weapon and reaches Grade 5.

Location

  • System: Muang
  • Facility: Broo's Legacy
  • Body: Muang 5 a
  • Engineer type: Ship Engineer
  • Referral required: Hera Tani
  • System permit required: No

Broo's Legacy is a surface Engineer base on Muang 5 a.[4]

How to Discover Broo Tarquin

Broo Tarquin is discovered through Hera Tani.

Reach Grade 3 access and progress at least one-third of the way toward Grade 4 with Hera to receive her referral to Broo.[2]

Hera can also refer Commanders to Tiana Fortune. Broo and Tiana are therefore parallel referrals rather than one being required for the other.

Field note

Receiving Hera's referral makes Broo known to you. His separate Combat-rank requirement must still be satisfied before his workshop can be unlocked.

How to Receive an Invitation

Reach the Pilots Federation Combat rank of Competent or higher.[1]

The Combat-rank progression leading to Competent is:

Harmless
└── Mostly Harmless
    └── Novice
        └── Competent

If your Combat rank is already Competent, Expert, Master, Dangerous, Deadly, Elite, or one of the higher Elite tiers, Broo's meeting requirement has been satisfied.

See Combat Rank for how Combat rank is earned and how to check your current progress.

Field note

Broo's Combat-rank requirement is lower than the requirements for some later combat-oriented Engineers. You do not need to reach Expert, Dangerous, or Elite before meeting him.

How to Unlock Broo Tarquin

Unlock requirements summary:

  • Reach Grade 3 access and at least one-third progress toward Grade 4 with Hera Tani.
  • Reach Competent or higher in Combat Rank.
  • Obtain a total of 50 units of Fujin Tea.
  • Donate the 50 Fujin Tea to Broo Tarquin.

Important

Fujin Tea is a rare commodity. It is not a Raw, Manufactured, or Encoded Engineering material. Each unit occupies one tonne of cargo space.

For the complete step-by-step process, see Unlocking Broo Tarquin.

Obtaining Fujin Tea

The normal production source for Fujin Tea is:

Broo requires 50 units in total.

Rare commodities have limited availability, so Futen Spaceport may not offer all 50 units at once. The available quantity can vary and should be checked when preparing the unlock.

Tip

Do not plan around an old guide that gives a fixed Fujin Tea allocation. Check the current amount available at Futen Spaceport and expect that more than one purchase may be necessary.

Player-owned Fleet Carriers may also offer Fujin Tea when another Commander has stocked it for resale. Carrier stock and prices are player-controlled and can change.[5]

See Fujin Tea for current acquisition details and rare-commodity mechanics.

Field note

Current Engineer data notes that station services may not become available immediately after Broo is unlocked. If the workshop or other expected services do not appear after completing the unlock, logging out and back in may make them available.[1]

Increasing Engineer Reputation

Reputation with Broo Tarquin can be increased by:

  • crafting Engineering modifications at Broo's Legacy; or
  • handing in bounty vouchers at Broo's Legacy.[1]

Higher Engineer reputation gives access to the higher grades Broo supports for each blueprint.

See Engineer Reputation for how ship Engineer reputation, grade access, blueprint progression, referrals, and alternative reputation methods work.

Tip

If you regularly bounty hunt, bringing unredeemed bounty vouchers to Broo's Legacy can help raise your Engineer reputation without relying entirely on Engineering rolls.

Engineer Unlock Chain

Broo Tarquin belongs to the Liz Ryder branch of the ship Engineer network.

The route to Broo is:

└── Etienne Dorn [Colonia]

Broo Tarquin does not currently lead to another Engineer in the active ship Engineer referral network.[6]

Field note

Broo and Tiana Fortune are parallel referrals from Hera Tani. Unlocking Broo is not required before Tiana, and unlocking Tiana is not required before Broo.

See Engineer Unlock Guide for the complete referral network.

Broo is therefore a maximum-grade Engineer for every conventional laser blueprint available for Beam, Burst, and Pulse Lasers.

Operations-era Plasma Conversion

The Operations update introduced Plasma Conversion for Beam, Burst, and Pulse Lasers.[3]

Plasma Conversion increases weapon power draw and converts part of the laser's thermal damage into plasma damage.[7]

Broo can apply Plasma Conversion through Grade 5 to:

At Grade 5, the current blueprint applies:

  • +40% power draw
  • -11% overall damage
  • conversion of part of the weapon's thermal damage into plasma damage[7]

Plasma Conversion also requires Merc Coin as part of its Engineering cost.

Important

Live only: Plasma Conversion was introduced with the Operations-era Engineering additions and is not available in Legacy.

Mel Brandon also provides Plasma Conversion through Grade 5, while The Dweller provides it through Grade 3.[7]

Experimental Effects

Experimental Effects are separate from the main Engineering blueprint. A compatible laser can normally have one Experimental Effect in addition to its blueprint modification.

Broo can apply Experimental Effects to all three laser types he engineers.

Beam Laser

Available Beam Laser Experimental Effects include:[10]

Beam Lasers have several Experimental Effects not available to Burst or Pulse Lasers, most notably Thermal Vent and Regeneration Sequence.

Burst Laser

Available Burst Laser Experimental Effects include:[11]

Pulse Laser

Available Pulse Laser Experimental Effects include:[12]

See Experimental Effects for the effects, tradeoffs, and material costs of each option.

Important

Experimental Effects cannot be applied through ordinary Remote Engineering. The weapon must be taken to an Engineer who works on that laser type.

Broo's Grade 5 access to all three standard laser families allows several very different build approaches.

Beam Lasers

Beam Lasers offer continuous thermal damage but place significant demands on the Power Distributor and generate substantial heat.

Two common blueprint approaches address those weaknesses differently.

Efficient

Efficient improves damage while substantially reducing:

  • power draw;
  • distributor draw; and
  • thermal load.[10]

At Grade 5, Efficient provides:

  • +24% damage
  • -48% power draw
  • -45% distributor draw
  • -60% thermal load[10]

Tip

Common sustained-fire choice: Efficient

Efficient is particularly useful when the ship needs to keep one or more Beam Lasers firing for longer without exhausting the WEP capacitor or producing excessive heat.

Long Range

Long Range increases both the weapon's maximum range and the distance at which damage falloff begins.[13]

At Grade 5, Long Range provides:

  • +100% maximum range
  • +100% damage falloff start
  • +15% power draw
  • +30% mass[13]

Tip

Common ranged-combat choice: Long Range + Thermal Vent

Long Range paired with Thermal Vent is a strong option for ships that can maintain Beam Laser hits at distance.

Long Range delays damage falloff, while Thermal Vent removes heat from the firing ship while the beam remains on target.

This is a recommendation rather than a universal requirement.

Thermal Vent increases heat dissipation while successfully striking the target, but increases heat generation while the weapon misses.[10]

Field note

Inertial Impact fundamentally changes Burst Laser behaviour. The added jitter makes it poorly suited to precision or long-range fire even though its theoretical damage output increases.

Pulse Lasers

Pulse Lasers have comparatively low distributor and thermal demands and can be engineered through Grade 5 for several roles.

Efficient further reduces their operating costs while increasing damage.[12]

Pulse Lasers can also use specialised Experimental Effects including:

The appropriate blueprint and Experimental Effect depend on whether the weapon is intended for sustained conventional damage or a specialised utility role.

Blueprint Pinning

After earning sufficient reputation with Broo, one of his blueprints can be pinned for use through Remote Engineering.

Tip

EDFM recommendation: Efficient Beam Laser is a strong general-purpose blueprint to consider pinning at Broo.

Broo provides Efficient Beam Laser Engineering through Grade 5, and the blueprint reduces several of the major costs associated with Beam Lasers while also improving damage.

If your builds more commonly use ranged Beam Lasers, Long Range Beam Laser may be the more useful pin instead.

Broo also provides Grade 5 Burst and Pulse Laser Engineering, so a frequently used blueprint for either weapon type remains a reasonable alternative.

Blueprint pinning should reflect the weapons and builds you actually use.

Important

A pinned blueprint does not allow you to apply Experimental Effects remotely. Effects such as Thermal Vent, Inertial Impact, and Emissive Munitions still require visiting an appropriate Engineer workshop.

What Broo Cannot Fully Engineer

Within his specialty, Broo has no conventional grade limitation: all three laser types he supports reach Grade 5.[1]

His maximum grades are:

  • Beam Laser: Grade 5
  • Burst Laser: Grade 5
  • Pulse Laser: Grade 5

Broo does not engineer other thermal or energy weapons such as:

  • Plasma Accelerators;
  • Rail Guns; or
  • Guardian energy weapons.

For other Grade 5 laser Engineers:

  • Mel Brandon provides Grade 5 Beam, Burst, and Pulse Laser Engineering in Colonia.[6]
  • The Dweller provides lower-grade Beam and Burst Laser Engineering and Pulse Laser Engineering through Grade 4.[6]
