== Mining role ==

Most ship-based [[Mining|mining]] begins by choosing a ring. The commander may choose a ring because it has a mapped hotspot, a known reserve level, a nearby market route, or simply a safe place to learn the mechanics.

A ring is only the environment. It does not remove the need to fit the correct equipment, carry limpets, prospect individual asteroids, manage the refinery, and verify sell prices.

== Mapping rings ==

A [[Detailed Surface Scanner]] can reveal mining hotspots in rings. Once a ring has been mapped, hotspot markers can be used as navigation targets for a mining run.

The practical loop is:

# travel to the ringed body;
# map the ring with the Detailed Surface Scanner;
# choose a hotspot or other target area;
# drop into the ring at a safe speed and distance; and
# begin prospecting asteroids for the chosen method.
